As per Vedic sciences, Hindu philosophy believes in rebirth unless your Sanchit and Prarabdha Karmas are totally exhausted.

It also believes in liberation in which once your past karma’s debt is over, you do not take a rebirth.

Garuda Purana on the other hand says that you can take a birth in animal species which means you can be born like a donkey or a dog. Vedic science on the other hand says that once you get a human body, you will either be liberated or get another human body only.

Garun Puran message can be read and interpreted in a different perspective. In mythology humans are linked to animal tendencies. For example, bull is linked to sexual and non-sexual desires, peacock to vanity etc. Probably, people who wrote Garuda Purana meant that if you do not live according to the Shastras, you will end up in getting another human body but with animal tendencies and behavior.

Teachings from both the epics of our country are practically taught to every child during school age. The first being Ramayana and the second being Mahabharata. Ramayana depicts Lord Ram as the savior of truth and a person who lives an in atmosphere of truthfulness till end. Ramayana probably is a reflection of the collective consciousness of satyuga where the majority of the people believed in truthfulness.

Then came an era of tritya or dwapara yuga where the definition of dharma (to hold people together) changed as per the collective consciousness of the people. The teaching of Lord Krishna in Mahabharata was that you have to live with truthfulness but speaking a lie can be your dharma in special situations. He said that a lie which can save somebody’s life without affecting any other person may be spoken and a truth which can hurt somebody if spoken and is not going to harm anybody if not spoken may not be spoken.

Today we are living in Kalyuga and Krishna of today is every medical doctor treating a patient. For the interest of the patient and the society if doctors were to follow the principles of Rama miseries would have increased. We as medical professionals are taught the example of Krishna and not Rama. We are taught that our utmost duty is the comfort of the patient. In doing so we are taught not to tell a dying person that he is going to die or not to tell a cancer patient that he is going to die in the next two to three months.

As a part of our social commitment a job of a medical professional is to save the life of a person. Everybody knows that prostitution is a crime but both Govt. of India and National AIDS Control Organization has a programme in which they distribute free condoms to the commercial sex workers. Similarly, all addicts during de-addiction are provided drugs as a part of the prescription though the quantity has been defined as to be lower than 5 grams. All addicts are treated and not put behind the bar.

The Law today state that an attempt to commit suicide is a crime (section 309 of the Indian Penal Code 1860) and consuming a drug is also a crime. But medically a doctor would look it differently. For him attempt to suicide is linked to an underlying depression and the patient needs a treatment and not jail. Addiction is a disease and every addict on similar grounds need de-addiction programme and not jail.

The country’s Law is very harsh and needs to be changed. Probably when the law was made addiction was not considered a disease.

Punishment for a person attempting to commit suicide should be to get a compulsory treatment for depression in a time bound manner and for an addict to get a complete de-addiction done in a time bound manner.

The answer is not punishment but rehabilitation. But till the Law is changed the only way medical professionals can help patients with attempted suicide is to write that it was accidental and patients who are addicts is by showing that either it was accidental ingestion or he or she ingested an unknown substance.

Most of the doctors are taught not to do urine or blood test in such cases as if the test comes out to be positive the police will have no other alternative than to arrest the addict and put them behind the bar.

The Law says that possession of cocaine in anybody’s house can amount to imprisonment. Will the same law apply to the Chief Minister or Lt. Governor of a state if cocaine is found in their state or Prime Minister of President of the country if cocaine is found in their country?

But if we look from the angle of law makers under section 64A in the NDPS act there is a provision that the court can direct drug addicts to get rehab done in a Govt. de-addiction centre and leave them. But most of the doctors are not aware of the same. Doctors can easily label a patient as drug addict and save them. But how many people would like to be labeled as an addict or prefer a Govt. centre when best of the private sector de-addiction centers are available.

But the bailable arrest of doctors in Rahul Mahajan case is a clear indication for the medical professionals to stop thinking they are next to GOD and they have any social responsibility. They should follow the rule book of the law and state observations as they are.

•Pain is a common occurrence in day to day life and should be managed well.
•Remember the word ‘ICE’ which means putting ice pack on the injured painful area, ‘C’ stands for compression and ‘E’ stands for elevation.
•The mantra, therefore, is to use cold compression and elevation for any injury.
•Alternate hot and cold packs are used for chronic pain.
•Painkillers should not be taken without a doctor’s advice.
•If a painkiller has to be taken, it should one tablet of paracetamol.
•People who take alcohol should not consume paracetamol without asking their doctor.

•In hospital setting, intravenous and intramuscular injectable painkillers are available.
•Always tell your doctor that you are taking painkillers.

Modern medicine is only couple of hundred years old. Prior to that it was traditional medicine being used based on the local needs of the country. The oldest of them being Indian ayurvedic system of medicine originating from atharveda. Unani, Chinese, and Tibetan medicine probably are all off shoots of Ayurveda.

Doctors in India since Vedic time have been equated to God. This has continued even today even after modern medicine has taken over. No other profession whether it is priest, lawyers, judges, politicians, occupies the same status as that of the medical doctors. Medical profession is the noblest profession.

The role of a doctor is to remove the miseries and save the life of a person and that is one reason most of us think that a medical doctor has been given designation equivalent to that of God. But it has many other perspectives also.

A common man’s perspective of God is a force that can do and undo anything, for whom nothing is impossible, who is the final decision maker, whose decision cannot be challenged, who can give an instantaneous relief, who can punish and reward and he who overcomes miseries. He can also answer the unknown as he is supposed to know everything. In Bhagwad Gita and other vedic texts, GOD is equated to consciousness, a network of energized information, a force which cannot be burnt by fire, wet by water, dried by air or cut by weapon; a force which is omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient and still ever-pervading.

A trained qualified medical doctor who has his understanding based on the mind, body and soul has nearly the same characteristics. He overcome miseries, mystifies his presence as soon as he touches the patient, gives immediate relief which starts at the time he gives a healing touch to the patient, his decision often is considered final and whose decisions are almost predictable to 100%.

God is the person on whom one has blind belief and faith. At the time when a person is sick or in acute emergency the same belief and faith is seen in doctors.

According to Deepak Chopra in his book ‘How to Know God’ he has explained God of different levels. According to him a God is a person from amongst the society with one step higher level of consciousness. He describes, as per the Vedic text, seven different levels of consciousness a person can posses and they are at the level of fight & flight, reactive consciousness, restful alertness consciousness, intuitive consciousness, creative consciousness, sacred consciousness and unified consciousness. If we take this as the classification then even a ruler of the society may be considered God by many people. But if you take universal criteria then a person who has achieved sainthood, who sees the same consciousness in everybody, treats individuals without caste, creed and religion who overcome miseries of people irrespective of their age, status or paying capacity is the GOD. Doctor fits into these criteria.

For him every patient is the same and his job is to remove his or her miseries at that particular moment. Probably, this is another reason why doctors have been considered God at every level of perception and from every segment of the society.

Most people have fear of death, fear of unknown, fear of loss and fear of disability. Whenever there is an unknown fear they think of the God. A medical doctor is also remembered whenever there is a health crisis.

Ayurvedic text describes clearly chapters & chapters on the subject ‘how to predict death’. It describes symptoms, which, if present, with certainty one can say that this person is going to die in how many hours, days, months or years. That level of prediction gives public a feeling that doctors are God because they have seen doctors for thousands of years giving verdict that this person is not going to survive after a particular period and that used to happen.

According to Bible every work God does he does through his messenger. Medical doctors are the only certified universal messenger of God in the society. Rest all become God for a particular period, for a particular instance or a particular person.

Health is not mere absence of disease but a state of physical, mental, social, spiritual, environmental and financial well being. This definition fully was used by the Eastern philosophy and Eastern pathies. The modern doctors, however, practice more often an instant practice with emphasis on quick treatment, handling acute emergencies and lifestyle illnesses. They hardly take mental and spiritual health into consideration. That may be one reason why slowly people are withdrawing the status of God from the doctors. They have started equating a medical doctor with any other marketing profession.

Out of four purposes of life: dharma, artha, kama & moksha, dharma is the most important. The literal meaning of dharma is to hold. God is the force with 100% dharma in his life. Dharma of a doctor is to treat and save the life of a person at any cost. One recalls the movie Achanak where the doctor saves the life of a person who has been sentenced to death and the day he saves him the police officer takes him for hanging. The movie ends with a message that a doctor has to do his dharma and police officer has to do his.

At the time of miseries, a doctor is treated as a healer. Nobody bothers whether the doctor came from which religion, caste, race or whether the doctor is male, female or from third gender. People do not bother about the ill habits or out of profession activities of the doctor; they are only concerned about the fact that doctor is a universal healer and overcomes the miseries of everybody who approaches him. A doctor provides free treatment to those who cannot afford or comes to an emergency ward without any money.

Putting doctors under Consumer Protection Act is the biggest blunder done by the government. How can one make God accountable? Can a child born blind at birth abuse or curse God for making him blind.

I think all of us should introspect and remember that doctor is the messenger of god born to remove miseries of the sick individuals.

Two-thirds of patients with uncontrolled asthma think their disease is well under control,

Asthmatics on proper medicines can not only lead a normal life but also reduce their future complications. Drugs include those medicines that keep the disease at bay as well as those that are used when a flare-up occurs. Uncontrolled asthmatics will invariably end up with right heart complications due to persistent lack of oxygenation in the blood.

Most asthmatics fail to perceive their level of disease control and with an uncontrolled state they often feel that their asthma is under control.

Dr. Eric van Ganse, of University of Lyon, France, in a study published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, examined 1,048 subjects with inadequate asthma control. When asked how they would rate their asthma control over the past 14 days, nearly 69 percent considered themselves to be completely or well controlled. Failure to perceive inadequate asthma control was more likely to be found in patients between the ages of 41 and 50 years.

In severe asthma, low blood oxygen levels might impair a person’s ability to assess their own breathing difficulty.

Another reason is that the notion of asthma control seems poorly understood by asthmatic patients. Also, mild to moderate asthma limits the activities of a person and they over a period of time take that as their normal limits.
