Preventing death due to hypothermia

People can die of hypothermia in this season. Imagine a situation when you come across two people lying in a JJ cluster area with no clothes early in the morning. One of them is shivering and the other one is not. The one who is shivering indicates that his body is trying to compensate with the low body co–temperature.

The other one, who is not shivering, may be dead, dying or normal.

Recall your naturopathy teaching “Sar Thanda, Pet Naram and Paon Garam“. If the sole of the feet and the feet are cold and the person is not shivering, this is a medical emergency. On the contrary, if the person is not shivering and the feet are warm, it is not medical emergency.

Therefore, hypothermia with no shivering and hyperthermia with no sweating are bad signs.

Alcohol takes away your power of judgment

Under the influence of alcohol, you may lose your power of judgment. I recall one of my friends who shot himself under the influence of alcohol after his wife refused to cook food for him and his friends at 11 pm. He said, “mujhe khana do nahin to mein khood ko shoot kar lunga“, to which she replied, “shoot kar lo” and he shot himself.

Under the influence of alcohol, your crime becomes less severe. In the present gang rape case, all the accused persons were under the influence of alcohol but they were not caught at the same time. If they were caught with alcohol in their blood, their crime would have become less severe than what it would have been if alcohol was not found.

If alcohol is the major culprit than the person who invites people to drink alcohol should be punished as he was very well aware that he was inviting others to drink alcohol and after drinking alcohol, when they lose their judgment power and they may misbehave with others and indulge in violence.

If you invite people at home for alcohol party, it is your duty:

• Not to serve more than 80 ml of alcohol
• Not to serve alcohol to people who have come without drivers and are going to drive back, or
• Take their keys in your possession and get them dropped after the party
• Never serve alcohol to drivers and other people who are going to drive.

A drunken man is like a snake or an injured lion. Never hurt the ego of a person who is under the influence of alcohol. He may hurt you. In Ayurveda, there are three types of people Vata, Pitta and Kapha. People with Vata personality can get drunk with limited amount of alcohol and people with Kapha personality can be sober even after a large drink of alcohol.

Under the influence of alcohol a person usually does not speak a lie and hence starts speaking truth which can provoke others if it does not go well with them.

However, if a drunken man commits a crime or is confronted with a powerful muscular man or a policeman, he often comes back to his senses.

Exercise: a prescription

  • Reduces the chances of getting heart disease. For those who already have heart disease, exercise reduces the chances of dying from it.
  • Lowers the risk of developing hypertension and diabetes.
  • Reduces the risk for colon cancer and some other forms of cancer.
  • Improves mood and mental functioning.
  • Keeps the bones strong and joints healthy.
  • Helps you to maintain a healthy weight.
  • Help maintain independence into later years
  • Age is no bar; there is abundant evidence that exercise can enhance health and well–being. But today for most watching TV, surfing the Internet, or playing computer and video games is replacing the helpful exercises.
  • The minimum threshold for good health is to burn at least 700 to 1,000 calories a week through physical pursuits.
  • Exercise improves health and can extend life. Adding as little as 30 min of moderately intense daily physical activity can help one avoid a host of serious ailments, including heart disease, diabetes, depression, and several types of cancer, particularly breast and colon cancers.
  • Regular exercise can also help one sleep better, reduce stress, control weight, brighten mood, sharpen mental functioning, and improve sex life.

As per Harvard researchers a well–rounded exercise program must have all the four components:

  • Aerobic activity: It is the centerpiece of any fitness program. Most benefits of exercise revolve around aerobic cardiovascular activity, which includes walking, jogging, swimming, and cycling. One should work out at moderate intensity when performing aerobic exercise—brisk walking that quickens the breathing is one example. This level of activity is safe.
  • Strength training: Strength or resistance training, such as elastic–band workouts and the use of weight machines or free weights, are important for building muscle and protecting bone. Bones lose calcium and weaken with age, but strength training can help slow or sometimes even reverse this trend
  • Flexibility training: Eases back pain; muscles tend to shorten and weaken with age. Shorter, stiffer muscle fibers make one vulnerable to injuries, back pain, and stress. But regularly performing exercises that isolate and stretch the elastic fibers surrounding the muscles and tendons can counteract this process. And stretching improves posture and balance.
  • Balance exercises: Prevent fall; balance erode over time, and regularly performing balance exercises is one of the best ways to protect against falls that lead to temporary or permanent disability. Balance exercises take only a few minutes and often fit easily into the warm–up portion of a workout. Many strength–training exercises also serve as balance exercises. Or balance–enhancing movements may simply be woven into other forms of exercise, such as tai chi, yoga, and Pilates.

In Indian mythology, the word “Sankranti” relates to any transformation or change. Makar Sankranti, which falls on 14th of January, one day after Lohri, indicates change in the direction of the sun, as it starts moving north resulting into longer days and shorter nights. In Hindu mythology, it is called Uttarayana. This was the period during Mahabharat when Bhishma Pitamah waited for his death.

The Uttarayana and Dakshinayana are not only time periods mentioned in the Vedic literature but also the state of minds. Uttarayana means a period for a positive state of mind and Dakshinayana a period for relatively negative state of mind. A positive state of mind in Uttarayana makes meditation easier in this period and more fruitful. Beginners should learn the process of meditation and pranayama during this period.

Bhagwad Gita talks about Moksha and liberation. Those who believe in the philosophy of rebirth know that once a soul is liberated at death, a person is not reborn. For others who believe that hell and heaven are in this birth only, liberation means dying peacefully and without sufferings.

The theory of rebirth is well described in Bhagwad Gita in Chapter 8. The gist of Lord Krishna’s teaching is:

1. Whatever you think throughout your life will be your thought at the time of death.
2. Whatever is the state of mind at the time of death will be the atmosphere you will get in the rebirth. For example if your state of mind is in cruelty at the time of death, you will be born in a cruel family.
3. If you are relaxed, thinking of God or chanting AUM at the time of death, there are chances your soul will be liberated.
4. Fire, illumination, daytime, fortnight before full moon and Uttarayana are the paths for liberation. It means these are the periods/ways for spontaneous positive thinking.

From mental health point of view, this knowledge can be converted into medical prescription. Uttarayana means satwik healthy state of mind and dakshinayana means a depressed state of mind. Performing and attending to Yagna, sitting in well–illuminated light or exposing oneself to sunlight during the day can be an adjunct to depression treatment. During the first fortnight of full moon and during Uttarayana, psychotherapy and counseling invariably will work better and the requirement of drugs may get reduced.

Uttarayana is also the period for ‘Snana’ (bath); ‘Daan’ (charity); ‘Dhyana’ (concentration), ‘Upwas’ (detoxification) and ‘Sun worship’ (Sunbath).

Snana means cleansing of the body, mind and the soul and combined with fast or ‘upwas’ and sun bath is the procedure for detoxification. Once the body is detoxified, it’s in a positive state of mind, can concentrate better and gets detached to material things. One should also start donating in charity whatever one has in excess.

Uttarayana can also be described in chakra language. From mooladhara chakra to anahata chakra is the Dakshinayana path and from anahata chakra to ajna chakra is the Uttarayana path. Those who travel on the Uttarayana path travel from anahata chakra. Those who travel on the Dakshinayana path start from mooladhara.

How to Eat Less And Stay Healthy?

Vedic science, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Allopathy all talk about eating less to stay healthy. Following are the ways to eat less:

  • The brain gets a signal that you have eaten only after 20 minutes, therefore, chew every bite of food at least 15 times. It not only provides enough hormones for enzymes but also sends signals to the brain. Therefore, the time spent per meal should be 20 minutes.
  • The taste buds are only on the tip and side of the tongue. If you gulp food, the brain will not get signals. Eating small pieces and chewing them properly also sends the signals through the taste buds.
  • The size of the fullness of the stomach also decides how much one can eat. The brain gets signal only when the stomach is 100% full. Therefore, one should not overeat and full the stomach to its size. Also if you eat less and over a period of time the size of the stomach will get shrunken.

Man Vachan Kaya

Man Vachan Kaya are the three fundamental principles used to define non–violence (ahimsa) and truthfulness (satya). Being truthful means what you think, speak and do, are the same. You should be one in whatever you think, do or speak. Ahimsa is the fundamental principle of Jainism, which means that you should be non–violent not only in your actions but also in your speech and thoughts. Being truthful makes you Satyugi. Only in certain circumstances, you may differ in your thinking, speech and actions. For example, you cannot tell a patient he is going to die in the next week. Here your mind may be saying something, your speech and actions will be something else. Any discordance in Man, Vachan and Kaya ends up with guilt and suppress emotions, which later on can cause blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.

Gaining weight losing strength versus losing weight gaining strength

When we gain weight, we must acquire more strength and when we lose weight, we must lose the strength. This is a fundamental principle.

If we gain weight and feel weak, it is a disease and when we lose weight and gain strength, we are recovering from the disease. One is not supposed to gain more than 5kg of weight after the age of 20 years. Any weight gain after that will only be due to accumulation of fat, which leads to insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance does not allow food to convert into energy. In the state of insulin resistance, whatever you eat is converted into fat. As it is not converted into energy so you feel weak. When you reduce insulin resistance by drugs or walking, the metabolism becomes normal and whatever you eat gets converted into energy and you start gaining strength.

Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha are the four fundamental principles of our very existence, which means earning righteously with a desire to fulfill the inner happiness.

Righteous earning is called ‘Artha’ and mistakenly it is linked to materialistic money. In mythology, Artha is synonymous with Lakshmi, Saraswati and Kali, where Lakshmi represents righteously earned materialistic wealth, Saraswati represents wealth of knowledge and Kali represents wealth of wisdom to fight the bad in you and in the society.

In any country, it is the wealth of knowledge, which is more important. India was ruled initially by warriors (Kali), later by money (Lakshmi) and in future will be ruled by knowledge (Saraswati).

It is the human resources, which today decide the growth of a company and the amount of money invested. If you have good human resources, your company is going to succeed.
