Wahans (Vehicles) In Mythology

By Dr K K Aggarwal

In mythological era, the negative tendency of a man is symbolized with the animal nature. Gods in Indian mythology are symbolized by living a positive behavior. Every God has been given a vehicle or Wahan. Both God and the Wahan symbolized how to live a positive life and how to control the animal tendencies.
Following are a few examples:

  1. Lord Ganesha rides a Mouse. Mouse in mythology is symbolized with greed and Ganesha with one who removes obstacles. The spiritual meaning behind both is – one should learn to control greed to tackle obstacles in life.
  2. Lord Shiva riding Nandi (Bull is symbolized with uncontrolled sexual desires) and the duo signifies that for learning meditation, one needs to control sexual desires first.
  3. Saraswati (the goddesses of knowledge) sitting on Swan symbolizes that to acquire knowledge one must learn to control the power of discrimination or Vivek. Swan can drink milk and leave water from a mixture of milk and water.
  4. Indra (the one who has a complete control over the intellect) riding on the elephant Airavat symbolizes that intellect (Indra) for its development requires control over Masti and madness (elephant).
  5. Durga (the perfect woman) riding a lion symbolizes that to become a perfect woman, one must learn to control her agitation or aggression (lion).
  6. Lakshmi (wealth) riding an owl symbolizes that to earn righteously, one must learn to control Owl like properties within us, which is not to get befooled.
  7. Lord Vishnu (the doer) riding eagle or Garuda (Eagles are opportunistic predators which means they eat almost anything they can find) means controlling your desires to eat the unbalanced food.
  8. Krishna riding five horses means one need to control our five senses.
  9. Kartikey rising on Peacock symbolizes that should learn to control one – s pride (vanity) or ego.
  10. The vehicle of Goddess Kali is a black goat. Agni rides Mesha – a ram. Kubera, the god of wealth, also has a ram as his vehicle. A ram is an uncastrated adult male sheep. Goat also signifies uncontrolled sexual desires but lesser than the bull.
  11. Yamraj rides a buffalo, which is known for its rampant destruction. Lord Yama or Yamraja is referred to as the God of death, twin brother, lord of justice, Dharma Raja. One can do justice only if one has a control over anger and aggressive behavior.

In mythology, apart from Wahans, animals are also shown to be sacrificed, which means to kill that animal tendency within ourselves. For example, during exams, you need to kill your goat behavior, which is known to possess excessive sexual desires. You may need to control them throughout the year but during exams you need to kill them. In Kali Pooja, a buffalo is sacrificed, which again means that in extreme situations, you may need to kill your ego or anger.

Fever

By Dr K K Aggarwal

Fever does not mean presence of infection. There are many situations where there may be fever without infection and hence needs no antibiotics.

  • Sepsis is a clinical syndrome, which results from the dysregulation of inflammatory response to an infection. The temperature is between 36°C to 38.30°C. Heart rate is often more than 90 per minute.
  • Symptomatic inflammatory response syndrome means a clinical syndrome, which results from dysregulated inflammatory response to any infections such as inflammation of the pancreas, inflammation of the vessels, clot formations in the veins.
  • Many antibiotics can cause fever; unless they are discontinued, fever will not subside.
  • Hyperthermia is a condition with elevated body temperature but it is not called fever. Examples are exposure to heat or heat stroke and in response to anesthetic drugs and anti-psychotic drugs. • Hyperthermia may not respond to anti–fever drugs. • When fever is more than 41.5°C, it is acute hyperpyrexia.
  • Hyperpyrexia is usually seen in patients with severe infections but it may also occur in brain hemorrhage. It responds to anti–fever drugs.
  • High temperature without infection is found in condition of hyperfunctioning of the thyroid gland.
  • Recreational drugs such as Ecstasy can also cause fever without any infection.
  • Mild fever can also occur after exertion.

This is a Vedic reminder to oneself that one should eat only those foods that are offered to God. Each time you offer food to God, it is a reminder to you to change your decision and choices. For example, alcohol, tobacco, onion, garlic, radish, etc. are not offered to God. If they are part of your food, there are chances that you will not consume these food items, if you observe this ritual.

Cheating is permitted out of 21 meals in a week. Over a period of time people have stopped following this ritual and now eat some foods, which cannot be offered to God in all their 21 meals. This is the reason why the incidence of lifestyle diseases is increasing in the community.

Every arthritis is not same

By Dr K K Aggarwal

Every arthritis is not the same. While osteoarthritis, also called as green arthritis, may require only painkillers and rehabilitation exercises, the red inflammation arthritis called rheumatoid arthritis, if not treated early and aggressively can end up with serious deforming complications.

Any arthritis in young women of child–bearing age should not be ignored, especially if it is worse in the morning and improves by movement. Most of them will have high platelet count on blood examination. These patients require aggressive treatment with disease–modifying drugs within days of the onset of symptoms and diagnosis. Approximately 1–2% of population may have this type of disease.

Osteoarthritis, on the other hand, is a disease of 50+age group and is due to wear and tear of various joints in the body and break down of the cartilage cushion in the joints. It mainly affects the weight–bearing joints like the knees, hips, neck and lower back joints. Inflammation is not a major feature of osteoarthritis. The experts said that another form of joint disorder is due to gout, which is never seen in people below 40 years of age and is almost never seen in young women before the onset of menopause unless there is a known underlying kidney disease and never seen in children.

The progression of osteoarthritis can be arrested with appropriate exercises, weight reduction and preventing posture and movement that worsen the disease.

Typical wear and tear of osteoarthritis is caused by sitting cross legged, doing Padmasana, squatting, other non physiological postures, sitting on low level surface like floor and low chairs, doing push ups, going up and down on stairs, etc.

Most yoga postures should be done under medical supervision and should follow with a counter yoga exercise.

Most patients of serious arthritis end up with treatment with other systems of medicines or with quacks.

“Students in tribal–dominated Jhabua district in Madhya Pradesh and adjoining villages in Gujarat believe that sacrificing goats can help them pass an exam. Ranapur, 45 km from Jhabua, an idol of Baba Dongar, a tribal god is making all wishes come true. Here, photocopies of exam admit cards are tied around trees and in return for their entreaties coming true, the supplicants promise to offer the god a goat, a hen or a bottle of liquor. Some 500 animals are sacrificed here every day and there are more than a dozen such priests who do the slaughtering.”

The above story is published in TOI and is correct as per mythology provided one understands the mythology.

In mythology riding means controlling and sacrificing means killings and animals are symbolized by human nature and behaviors.

For example, mouse is a vahan of Ganesha and symbolizes that to overcome obstacles one need to control one’s greed. Similarly owl is the vahan of Laxmi and means that for righteous earning one should be able to control one’s foolishness.

Goats and Rams represent sexuality and sexual desires and lambs represent purity and innocence.

Goat is mentioned in mythology both as a symbol and as a vehicle of Gods. In the Samkhya system Prakriti is depicted as a female goat (Mother Nature). The color of goat is red, black or white representing Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas.

The vehicle of Goddess Kali is a black goat. Agni rides Mesha – a ram. Kubera, the god of wealth, also has a ram as his vehicle. A ram is an uncastrated adult male sheep.

Sacrificing during exams means controlling your tamas or inertia and rajas or aggression, and controlling your sexual desires (un–castrated males).

Brahmacharya in mythology is a period where you are supposed to keep your sexual deviations and other desires under control. So sacrificing a goat does not mean physical killing of goat but killing of goat like activities within you.

  • Prescribing antibiotics when no bacterial infection exists.
  • Prescribing the wrong antibiotic or the wrong dose.
  • Prescribing antibiotics for longer than necessary.
  • Prescribing strong antibiotics, when a less strong would be as effective.
  • Prescribing an expensive antibiotic when a cheaper but equally effective antibiotic is available.

When are you at fault?

  • You demand antibiotics even when the doctor thinks it is unnecessary
  • You buy an antibiotic without prescription.
  • You buy an antibiotic without a bill
  • You stop antibiotics as soon as your symptoms start improving and you do not take a full course of antibiotics.
  • When you change brands without doctors knowledge.

You Can Reverse Heart Disease

Every cell in the body eventually dies and replaced by new cell. Every day is a new opportunity to build a new body. The entire body totally rebuilds itself in less than two years with 98% in less than one year.

  • Stomach lining rebuilds itself in 5 days.
  • Your skin rebuilds itself in one month.
  • Liver rebuilds itself in 6 weeks.
  • Your DNA rebuilds itself every 2 months.
  • Bone rebuilds the whole new skeleton in 3 months
  • Blood rebuilds itself in 4 months.
  • Brain rebuilds itself in 1 year.

You cannot swim in the same river twice. With every breath, we inhale 1022 atoms coming from all cells present in the universe. We share everything with everybody with every breath. Quadruplet atoms in the last three weeks have gone through our breath. Billion atoms out of them may have been those of Christ or Mohammad.

The very fact that our body rebuilds itself, it is possible to change the Dharma of the new cells and even prevent or regress cancers and heart diseases.

Alcohol: Benefits Vs RiskAlcohol: Benefits Vs Risk

By Dr K K Aggarwal
Filed Under Wellness | Tagged With: , | | Comments Off

  • There is consensus that non drinkers should not start and the ones who drink can continue provided they do so in moderation and in absence of contraindications. People tend to consume more alcohol in winter and near the New Year.
  • Persons who have been lifelong abstainers cannot be easily compared with moderate or even rare drinkers. Recommending alcohol intake to them even if they would agree to drink is not justified.
  • The diseases that moderate alcohol use prevents (such as coronary heart disease, ischemic stroke, and diabetes) are most prevalent in the elderly, men, and people with coronary heart disease risk factors. For these groups, moderate alcohol use is associated with a substantial mortality benefit relative to abstention or rare drinking.
  • For young to middle–aged adults, especially women, moderate alcohol use increases the risk of the most common causes of death (such as trauma and breast cancer).
  • Women who drink alcohol should take supplemental folate to help decrease the risk of breast cancer.
  • Men under the age of 45 may also experience more harm than benefit from alcohol consumption. In this age group, moderate alcohol use is unlikely to provide any mortality benefit, but consumption of less than one drink daily appears to be safe if temporally removed from operation of dangerous equipment. For individuals with established contraindications to alcohol use, even this level of alcohol use is dangerous.
  • Men can tolerate more alcohol than women. The ideal therapeutic dose of alcohol is around 6 grams per day. Medically safe limits are 10 grams in one hour, 20 grams in a day and 70 grams in a week. (50% for the women).
