Vaccination for elderly

The best gift to your grandparents is to get them vaccinated if they have not been vaccinated earlier.

  • Annual influenza or flu vaccine is recommended for all persons aged 6 months and older.
  • Pneumonia vaccine should be given to all adults aged 65 years and older.
  • Tetanus Toxoid should be given to all irrespective of age after every 10 years.
  • A single dose of herpes zoster vaccine is recommended for adults aged 60 years and older regardless whether they have had a previous episode of herpes zoster. The vaccination begins at 60 years of age.
  • Hepatitis B vaccine should be given to all if they have not been vaccinated earlier.
  • All diabetics aged 60 years or older should be vaccinated for hepatitis B. This recommendation is based on increased need for associated blood glucose monitoring in long term care facilities.
  • All patients with chronic liver diseases should also be given the Hepatitis B vaccine.

The answer is yes. The difference between a Mantra and a sound is that the Mantra sound is an energized sound with medicinal values. There are many aspects of Mantra as a sound:

1. The type of sound matters. It is a well known that chanting of vowel sounds produces interleukin 2 in the body, which has the same action as that of aspirin and works like a natural painkiller. Chanting of nasal consonants produces delta activity in the EEG and has similar action like tranquilizers. Chanting of other consonants has different actions in the body for example chanting of LUM reduces fear, VUM reduces attachments, RUM reduces doubt, YUM increases love, HUM increases truthfulness and AUM non-judgmental activities.

2. Mantra sounds can be vibratory or non-vibratory. Vibratory sounds use nasal consonants and vibrate bones starting from mandible, spine, and the automatic plexus lying along the spine. Chanting of nasal consonants leads to parasympathetic state.

3. Any Mantra chanting associated with reduced respiratory rate leads to parasympathetic state of the body. Ideal is to reduce the respiratory rate to 4 per minute and then continue it for next 20 minutes that means 80 breathes in 20 minutes. This can be done by chanting, for example, the complete Gayatri mantra in one respiratory cycle.

4. How does one chant also matters? The yogic way of chanting is when the mind is in mantra or the chanting. This leads to deeper relaxation.

5. Whether you chant with the understanding the meaning of the Mantra or not also matters? If you do that the chanting benefits will be more. Foreigners do not understand the meaning of Indian Mantras but yet they get benefits. But if they chant with understanding the meaning of the Mantra, the health benefits will be more.

6. Chanting a mantra with its meaning in the mind invokes the power of intention. It’s like getting connected to any search engine on the internet and typing your query. Your consciousness in our body is the internet and the intention the search button.

7. Chanting a mantra with its meaning in the mind also results in emotions and expressions which have an added advantage.

8. Overtone chanting has additional benefits. The new sound heals not only those who are chanting but also those who are listening and bystanders.

9. Group chanting is more powerful. If 1% population chants together, rest 99% also gets the benefits.

10. One can also do distance healing by chanting at a far distance. The only way one can explain this is by understanding consciousness as an internet cum social site model. In this understanding each one of us has our page in the internet (soul) as well as a page in the cloud internet (spirit). All our pages are connected with every person in this earth through the cloud internet. People can chant at a distance and their audio file with intent automatically gets posted on their soul internet and the cloud internet. The person for whom we are chanting the prayer gets the benefit whenever he is connected to the cloud internet.

11. During chanting, the mind diverts. Continuously chanting of Mantra for 12 seconds means concentration, 12×12 seconds is contemplation and 144×144 seconds is meditation. So by concentrating on the object of concentration, the mantra, one can avoid diversion of the mind.

12. The intensity or the loudness of the chanting sound also matter. Higher the loudness, less will be the effects. Japa meditation involves two hours of Mantra chanting to get the benefit. In a non Japa meditation, these benefits can be acquired in 20 minutes. Thoughtless chanting is more powerful than verbal Mantra chanting. Vipasana is chanting without Mantra where you are just aware of the breath and one has to do this type of meditation for hours together to get the benefit.

13. In Chautha or Teravi (mourning period), we have one hour of chanting of Mantra or prayers. This helps relax the mind, shifts one from sympathetic to parasympathetic mode. In the initial 15 minutes, there is sympathetic overactivity and the person is restless. As the time passes, parasympathetic state takes over and by the time one hour is over, parasympathetic state is at its full blown activity and at that time getting connected to cloud internet is easier. Attending the entire one hour of Chautha ceremony is only for those who are connected to the dead person and want to get distressed. These people have empathy for the deceased person. Those who have sympathy mostly show up before or after the Chautha ceremony to complete their formality. In Chautha, we say that Bhagwan Uski Aatma Ko Shanti De. God will forgive him only if the soul is under distress, which can only happen if there are some non–fulfilled desires and these desires will always be linked to a particular person. Therefore, only those who have guilt will feel that the diseased person’s soul is not at rest. In a Chautha ceremony one can only remove this guilt in the parasympathetic phase towards the end of the Chautha ritual and seeks forgive and forgiveness.

14. In different religions, this has different implications. In Hinduism, we only attend Chautha of whom we know but in Islam people attend the mourning ceremony of people whom they not even know. They believe in mass prayers and pray for the soul of the deceased person. In Islam this mass prayer message gets written on the cloud internet and has mass effect in the community. In Islam, a person usually says Mein khuda se tumhare liye dua mangunga. It is possible for them as they offer Namaz prayer five times in a day and when they ask for Dua for someone they put the intent in the cloud internet which can be retrieved by others. In Christians, it is different. The dying patients or the relations ask the doctors and others to pray with them and not only for them.

Tackling tension headaches

Tension headache usually develops in the afternoon, causing mild or moderate pain that may feel like dull tightness or a band of pressure. Tension headaches occur when neck, shoulder, and scalp muscles become tense. If you suffer from headaches often, more than once or twice a week.

• Don’t skip meals.

• Get enough sleep.

• Avoid stress and fatigue.

• Learn physical and relaxation therapies.

• Apply heating pad to the neck and shoulders to relax the muscles. • Exercise the muscles of neck and shoulders by strengthening and stretching them. • Relaxation exercises that focus your attention on various parts of your body in order to relax and release tension and stress can also help.

• Learn Biofeedback relaxation techniques. Learn to recognize when you are becoming tense and then find ways to relax the muscles before they tighten so much that you develop a tension headache.

• Identify trigger points, at the back of the neck or in the shoulders. Injecting a local anesthetic into these areas may eliminate the pain and prevent headache.

A physical body becomes useless once the life force is gone. The same body, which was lovable to everyone, becomes a liability after death. Everyone wants to dispose it as early as possible as keeping a dead body at home is considered a bad omen. During the transfer of dead body from one place to another nobody wants to keep the body in a vehicle other than a hearse van, meant to transport dead bodies. No family would be willing to carry the dead body of a person in a car in which the deceased person had been traveling or driving for years. May be for any reason, health or rituals, once you touch a dead body you are required to take a bath before you commence your daily routine. Within a matter of hours in absence of life force, the physical body starts disintegrating and in a matter of days, it shows signs of self–destruction and putrefaction. This vital force is nothing but the soul, aatma, brahma, spirit or consciousness described in different Vedic texts. Aadi Shankaracharya in his book Bhaja Govindam shloka 6 says: yávat–pavano nivasati dehe távat–pøcchati kuùalam gehe, gatavati váyau dehápáye bháryá bibhyati tasmin káye.(6) “Till the life force remains in the body, people come and enquire about your welfare. But, the moment the life force goes out, even your wife is afraid of coming anywhere near your body”. Life force can be equated to the network of information in computer, radio, television or mobile phone. All these gazettes without a data are useless and are thrown away. This silent data retrievable by operational and application software represent the life force or soul of these electronic gadgets. Shankara says that as one does not give importance to a computer without data one should not give importance to the physical body. It is the life force within the body which is respected and cared for and that is what real “I” or “We” are. All glories of the body are only until the life force remains in it. In Bhagavad–Gita, Lord Krishna in Chapter 2 (2.23) says about this life force or ataman “fire cannot burn it, weapon cannot cut it, water cannot wet it, air cannot dry it, it is immortal”. The most defined relationship in Vedic text is between husband and wife. The very fact even a wife after death does not want to touch the husband signifies the importance of life force. The life force has no dimensions: height, weight, color or image. It is immortal, omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. The weight of a live and a dead body immediately after the death is the same. It is the same life force, which dwells in everybody and during life is modified by the action, memory and desire cycle. If one gets attached to any of the three, then one starts getting detached from the soul or the life force. People who are in touch with their life force all the time attain peace and happiness and die young in old age. Most Vedic mahavakyas talk about, that it is the same spirit, which dwells in everybody and hence every person in the society should be welcomed and treated with equal importance. Ahambrahmasami, tatwamasi, vasudeva kutumbakam, etc. are a few of the examples. According to Aadi Shankara, one can achieve non-duality only by seeing God in everyone. Atithi–devo–bhava is also based on the same principle.

Preventing a Peptic Ulcer

An ulcer is a breakdown in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine. A type of bacterial infection is the most frequent cause, but lifestyle factors may also raise the risk. The following preventive steps may ward off a peptic ulcer:

• Limit alcohol to no more than two drinks daily.

• Stop smoking or chewing tobacco.

• If you need to take painkillers, avoid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as naproxen, ibuprofen or aspirin.

• Consider, with your doctor’s approval, paracetamol instead.

Always respect viewpoints of others

It is an old saying that one is proud of his or her own intelligence and somebody else’s partner and wealth. Most disputes occur when there is ego clash and that occurs when you want your point to be noticed by everybody. But remember that for every situation, invariably, there will be multiple opinions. In one of my meetings, I asked my lifestyle students-cum-colleagues to imagine Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Minister of the country. Following were the views of various people:

• He is too young.

• He is immature.

• He is childish.

• It will be failure of democracy

• He has no political will.

• He has no strength for taking decisions.

• He has no experience.

• He is open minded.

• He will bring youth to politics.

• He has experienced team behind him.

• He will bring a new approach to politics etc etc.

Achieving ideal systolic blood pressure (SBP) at the expense of lower–than–ideal diastolic blood pressure (DBP) could be harmful in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

In a review of US veterans with CKD, SBP of 130 to 159 mm Hg and DBP of 70 to 89 mm Hg were associated with the lowest mortality rates as per a study that appeared Aug 20 in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Those in whom both SBP and DBP were concomitantly very high or very low had the highest mortality rates.

Patients with moderately elevated SBP combined with DBP no less than 70 mm Hg had consistently lower mortality rates than did patients with ideal SBP combined with DBP less than 70 mm Hg. Results were consistent in subgroups of patients with normal and elevated urinary microalbumin-creatinine ratios. Nearly one–third (32.5%) of the patients in the study cohort had SBP greater than 140 mm Hg and DBP less than 70 mmHg.

Definition of Health

Health is not mere absence of disease; it is a state of physical, mental, social, spiritual, environmental and financial well being. All aspects of health are not defined in Allopathy.

During MBBS, medical students are taught more about the physical health. Social and mental health are covered only in few lectures. Community health is a separate subject but never given its due importance. Spiritual health is not defined at all and financial health is hardly covered.

Yet, in day-to-day practice, it is the social, financial, spiritual and community health, which is most important during patient-doctor communication. It is incorporated in the four basic purposes: dharma, artha, kama and moksha.

Dharma and artha together form the basis of karma which is righteous earning. You are what your deep rooted desires are. Most diseases today can be traced to a particular emotion, positive or negative. Anger and jealously are related with heart attack, fear with blood pressure, greed and possessiveness with heart failure. Unless the mind is healthy, one cannot be free of diseases.

The best description of health comes from Ayurveda. In Sanskrit, health is swasthya, which means establishment in the self. One is established in the self when there is a union of mind, body and soul. Most symbols of health are established around a shaft with two snakes and two wings. The shaft represents the body, two snakes represent the duality of mind and the two wings represent the freedom of soul.

Sushrut Samhita in Chapter 15 shloka 10 defines the Ayurvedic person as under:

Samadosha, samagnischa,
Samadhatumalkriyah,
Prasannatmendriyamanah,
Swastha iti abhidhiyate.

From Ayurvedic point of view for a person to be healthy must have balanced doshas, balanced agni, balanced dhatus, normal functioning of malkriyas and mind, body, spirit and indriyas full of bliss and happiness.

Human body is made up of structures (Kapha), which have two basic functions to perform; firstly, metabolism (pitta) and movement (vata). Vata, pitta and kapha are called doshas in Ayurveda. Samana dosha means balance of structures, metabolism and movement functions in the body. Agni in Ayurveda is said to be in balance when a person has normal tejas and a good appetite.

Ayurveda describes seven dhatus: rasa, rakta, mamsa, medha, asthi, majja, shukra and they are required to be in balance. They are equivalent to various tissues in the human body.

Ayurveda necessitates proper functioning of natural urges like urination, stool, sweating and breathing and that is what balances in malakriya means.

Ayurveda says for a person to be healthy he has to be mentally and spiritually healthy, which will only happen when his or her indriyas are cheerful, full of bliss and devoid of any negativities. For indriyas to be in balance one has to learn to control over the lust cum desires, greed and ego. This can be done by learning regular pranayama, learning the do’s and don’ts in life, living in a disciplined atmosphere and learn to live in the present.

Regular pranayama shifts one from sympathetic to parasympathetic mode, balances the mind and thoughts and helps in removing negative thoughts from the mind. For living a disabled life one can follow the yama and niyama of yoga sutras of Patanjali or do’s and don’ts taught by various religious gurus, leaders and principles of naturopathy. Living in the present means conscious or meditative living. This involves either learning meditation 20 minutes twice a day or learning subtle mental exercises like mind–body relaxation, yogic shavasana, self–hypnotic exercises, etc.

According to Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, a person who eats thrice a day is a rogi, twice a day is a bhogi and once a day is yogi. The take home message is: to live more one has to eat less.

Swar yoga defines the importance of respiration and longevity. According to this yoga shastra, everybody has a fixed number of breaths to be taken during the life span.

Lesser the number a person takes in a minute more is the life. It also forms the basis of pranayama which is nothing but longer and deeper breathing with reduced respiratory rate. To be healthy one can remember to follow the principle of moderation and variety in diet & exercise, regular pranayama & meditation and positive thinking

Inspirational Story: The Good you do, comes back to you

Every day a woman baked a chapati (roti) for members of her family and an extra one for a hungry passerby. She kept the extra chapati on the window sill, for whosoever would take it away.

Every day, a hunchback came and took away the chapati. Instead of expressing gratitude, he muttered the following words as he went his way: “The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!” This went on, day after day.

Every day, the hunchback came, picked up the chapati and uttered the words: “The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!” The woman felt irritated. “Not a word of gratitude,” she said to herself…

“Everyday this hunchback utters this jingle! What does he mean?” One day, exasperated, she decided to do away with him. “I shall get rid of this hunchback,” she said. And what did she do?

She added poison to the chapati she prepared for him! As she was about to keep it on the window sill, her hands trembled. “What is this I am doing?” she said. Immediately, she threw the chapati into the fire, prepared another one and kept it on the window sill.

As usual, the hunchback came, picked up the chapati and muttered the words: “The evil you do, remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!” The hunchback proceeded on his way, blissfully unaware of the war raging in the mind of the woman.

Every day, as the woman placed the chapati on the window sill, she offered a prayer for her son who had gone to a distant place to seek his fortune. For many months, she had no news of him. She prayed for his safe return. That evening, there was a knock on the door. As she opened it, she was surprised to find her son standing in the doorway. He had grown thin and lean. His garments were tattered and torn. He was hungry, starved and weak. As he saw his mother, he said, “Mom, it’s a miracle I’m here. While I was but a mile away, I was so famished that I collapsed. I would have died, but just then an old hunchback passed by. I begged of him for a morsel of food, and he was kind enough to give me a whole chapati. As he gave it to me, he said, “This is what I eat everyday: today, I shall give it to you, for your need is greater than mine!” As the mother heard those words, her face turned pale.

She leaned against the door for support. She remembered the poisoned chapati that she had made that morning. Had she not burnt it in the fire, it would have been eaten by her own son, and he would have lost his life! It was then that she realized the significance of the words:

“The evil you do remains with you: The good you do, comes back to you!”

Do good and don’t ever stop doing good, even if it is not appreciated at that time
