Traditionally people believe that Nastik are people who do not go to temples or related places of worship. They also do not believe in God. To differentiate between Astik and Nastik we need to first understand the concept of Sanatan Dharma and Arya Samaj Dharma. People who believe in Sanatan Dharma consider God as separate from the self and worship him in the form of an idol. They believe in Dualism theory. Arya Samaj followers do not do idol worship and believe in non dualism and treat God and self as one. Arya Samajis therefore will not go to a temple where the idols of Gods are placed. Being an Arya Samaji does not mean that the person is Nastik. The word Nastik means someone who does not believe in God at all therefore he or she also does not believe in self as God is nothing but self. In medical sciences these are the people who have no insight and will usually be suffering from depression and loss of self esteem. Disclaimer The views expressed in this write up are my own .

Patients with severe thermal burns are at significant risk of death and major morbidity. Look for evidence of respiratory distress and smoke inhalation injury a common cause of death in the acute burn victim. Laryngeal edema can develop suddenly and unexpectedly. Burn depth and size determine fluid resuscitation and the need for transfer. Vascular collapse from burn shock is a critical component. Rapid aggressive fluid resuscitation to reconstitute intravascular volume and maintain end organ perfusion is crucial. The fluid requirement during the initial 24 hours of treatment is 4 mL kg of body weight for each percent of total body surface area burned given IV. Superficial burns are excluded from this calculation. One half of the calculated fluid need is given in the first 8 hours the remaining half is given over the subsequent 16 hours. It is important to monitor urine output. Hourly urine output should be maintained at 0.5 mL kg in adults. Burn patients may be exposed to carbon monoxide and require immediate treatment with high flow oxygen. Cool and clean wounds but avoid inducing hypothermia. Remove any jewelry and any hot or burned clothing and obvious debris not densely adherent to the skin. Irrigation with cool water may be used. Topical antibiotics are applied to all non superficial burns. Give opioids morphine to treat pain and give tetanus prophylaxis.

All those out there who feel you are at your wits end wondering how things don t ever work out for you can now relax and dwell on all those failures that life has taken you through and turn failure into success. Failure doesn t mean you are a failure. But it does mean you haven t succeeded yet. Failure doesn t mean you have accomplished nothing. It does mean you have learned something. Failure doesn t mean you have been a foolish. It does mean you had a lot of faith. Failure doesn t mean you ve been discouraged. It does mean you were willing to try. Failure doesn t mean you don t know what to do. It does mean you have to do it in a different way. Failure doesn t mean you are inferior. It does mean you are not perfect. Failure doesn t mean you have wasted your life. It does mean you have a reason to start afresh. Failure doesn t mean you should give up. It does mean you must try harder. Failure doesn t mean you ll never make it. It does mean it will take a little longer. Failure doesn t mean God has abandoned you. It does mean God has a better idea. Nails can harbor dirt and germs and contribute to the spread of many infections. Keep nails short. Trim nails often. Scrub the underside of nails with soap or water each time you wash your hands. Clean any nail grooming tools before use. Nail grooming tools should be sterilized before use in saloons. Avoid biting or chewing nails. Avoid cutting cuticles as they act as barriers to prevent infection. Never rip or bite a hang nail instead clip it with a clear sterilized nail trimmer a hang nail is small torn piece of skin next to finger nail or toe nail . Infections of the finger nails or toe nails are often characterized by swelling of the skin or thickening of the nail. This sutra from Bible has a very deep significance in day to day life. The truth is ever lasting and always ends up in internal happiness and self realization and in the long run always gives you happiness and an all win situation. On the contrary a lying tongue will only give you a momentary pleasure but will lead to or create some difficulty later in life. Spoken words cannot come back just as in the case of a released arrow from the bow. Once lost one cannot get back their youth virginity or respect. Similarly spoken bad words cannot be taken back and once spoken will create negative waves in the other persons on whom they were spoken mind which will persist as repressed thoughts or memory in the people s mind forever. Such bad memories will keep on coming back in the person s mind causing damage to the personal relationships. A spoken word is a karmic expression. For every karmic action there is an opposite and equal reaction. For every negative karmic expression one has to pay the debt either now or in future. The law of karma says that every debt has to be paid. It is always better to avoid negative language both in spoken words as well as in the mind. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali describe thinking speaking or doing anything wrong as having the same karmic significance. We should not only purify our self in actions and spoken words but also in the mind. If a person keeps negative thoughts in the mind sooner or later the same will be reflected to the outside world. The momentary pleasure which one gets by lying has no spiritual significance as it only satisfies your ego sense or makes you attached to any of the five senses. The transient pleasure experienced by the body stimulates a chain of reactions consisting of action memory and desire leading to action again which will only intensify the greed attachments. In the Mahabharata Lord Krishna has given only two examples which work as an exception to such a situation. Any truth which harms others may not be spoken and any lie which does not harm anyone but benefit a few may be spoken. Truth is the opposite of doubt it is always better to clear all the doubts from the mind as any repressed doubts can end up into causation of heart attack paralysis and cancer. Truth also means taking conscious based decisions as the consciousness will never lie. While taking any decision one should always ask oneself Is it the truth Is it necessary Will it bring happiness to me and the people around Lord Krishna is also described as Satchitanand which only indicates qualities like truthfulness conscious based decisions and internal happiness. The practice of truthfulness has to be practical over a period of time and made a part and parcel of your daily life. To start with a person may have bad experiences but in the long run truthfulness will always win. Disclaimer The views expressed in this write up are my own .

Why do people suffer?

By Dr K K Aggarwal

As per Garud Puran and Hindu mythology one of the reasons for suffering is the debts of your past birth. Your purpose of life is to face sufferings to pay these debts. The second reason your present deeds till today starting from birth. If your sum total of bad deeds is more than good deeds they get added to your previous birth s debts. Third reason for suffering is the form of struggle which you entertain to attain future success. Some people do not call it as suffering. The last reason for suffering is that some people acquire yogic powers to take on the sufferings of others. The classical examples are Shirdi Sai Baba and Jesus Christ who were known to cure others by adding their suffering to their own account. If you see most of the Gods or holy people had suffered in their last time be it Jesus Christ Krishna Buddha or Sai Baba. Only Rishi Munis can remain alive and die at will even after they have paid for all their debts. Disclaimer The views expressed in this write up are my own .

When it comes to eating junk food one may blame the brain. Addiction is a disease and the same has been proved by a study. Two areas of the brain have to work together to give the self control to reject unhealthy foods. California Institute of Technology researchers used MRI to scan the brains of volunteers as they looked at photos of dozens of types of foods and decided which ones they d like to eat. They found significant differences in the brain activity between people who had self control in terms of making food choices and those with no self control. An area of the brain called the ventromedial prefrontal cortex is involved in all value based decisions. When ventromedial prefrontal cortex activity decreases a person will probably reject an item whereas increased activity means they ll probably choose it. The study published in the issue of Science found that in people with no self control the ventromedial prefrontal cortex seemed to take into consideration only the taste of a food. In people with good self control another area of the brain called dorsolateral prefrontal cortex becomes active and modulates the basic value signals so that the self controllers also incorporate health considerations into their decisions.
