An analysis from the large international PURE trial reopened the debate over the link between sodium and blood pressure. Presenting PURE SODIUM at the European Society of Cardiology 2013 Congress, Dr Andrew Mente (McMaster University, Hamilton, ON) and colleagues said that only certain subgroups will actually experience blood pressure benefits from restricting their sodium consumption.

Ayurveda has been talking about it for some time. People with Kapha personality and pitta personality will benefit and not those with vata personality.

As per Ayurveda physiology, food is Brahman and contains the same consciousness as in us and this consciousness is the essence of any food.

Any food digested is converted into three portions, the gross undigested food is converted into waste (feces); the middle one is converted in one of the Dhatus and the subtlest form gets converted into ojas or the immunity.

As per standard Ayurveda, food once eaten is converted into the first Dhatu i.e. Rasa. Once the formation of Rasa is complete, the remaining is converted into Rakta (blood).The left over essence of food makes Mamsa (muscles), the leftover of which makes (Medha (adipose tissue) and so on to form Asthi (Bone), Majja (bone marrow) and Shukra (sperm/ova).

As per this physiology, the second Dhatu will only form once the first Dhatu is of good quality and so on and at any step in Dhatu, if not formed properly, subsequent Dhatu will also show defective formation.

For example, defective Dhatu at the stage of Asthi (bone) will have normal plasma (blood), muscle and adipose tissue but may have an impaired immunity/sperm/bone marrow. Similarly, defective Dhatu at the level of bone marrow may have only impaired immunity with no impairment of other Dhatus. On the other hand, impairment of Dhatus at the level of plasma or blood will involve all other Dhatus in sickness. Isolated disorders of Shukra may have no involvement of other Dhatus at all.

This Ayurveda principle can help us to answer many yet unanswered questions in modern allopathy. Like – why in typhoid fever all the organs are involved and why in azoospermia no other organ is involved.

Upanishads talk about formation of Dhatus in much more detail. According to them, different types of foods make different types of Dhatus. Fiery foods like oil and ghee are responsible for formation of Karmendriyan (part of shukra), bone and bone marrow (Dhatu).

The earthy foods are responsible for formation of Gnanandriyan and Manas (shukra) and muscle (flesh) and water in food is responsible for formation of Rasa and Rakta (plasma and blood) and Pran (Shukra).

This means that every different type of food would make different types of Dhatus and a balanced food with a combination of fire, water and earth will only be responsible for formation of shukra, immunity or the essence.

  • Exercise for 80 minutes a day and brisk exercise 80 minutes a week.
  • The speed of walking should be at least 80 steps per minute.
  • Do resistance or weight-bearing exercises twice in a week.
  • Avoid doing strenuous exercises for the first time in life after the age of 40.
  • Ayurveda says that one should exercise according to his or her body type.
  • Patients with diabetes should not exercise if blood sugar is lower than 90.
  • In conditions of smog, avoid walking early in the morning till sunlight appears.

Human body needs servicing too!

While automobile vehicles need preventive servicing every three months, the human body needs it every two months.

According to Ayurveda, the seasons change every two months, approximately in the middle of the month.

Ayurveda describes these changes and precautions to be taken in great detail. The current makar rashi season, which starts today with sun changing its direction northwards resulting into lengthening of day and shortening of night time needs many lifestyle changes to balance health and prevent diseases. Vata gets aggravated, kapha gets accumulated and pitta gets depleted in this season.

In allopathic language, pitta denotes metabolic functions, vata signifies movement functions and kapha stands for secretory functions of the body.

Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal are celebrated with khichdi, milk, gur, bhaat, sesame (Til) laddu, light hot food and beverages, etc. all indicating measures to reduce vata and kapha and to increase pitta in the body.

As per Ayurveda 2–6 pm in the evening and 2–6 am in the morning are the periods of Vata or creativity. Most poets and writers do their creative work during these times of the day, especially 2–6 am in the morning.

Vata period is more creative and you are less likely to make mistakes. Four PM in the evening is considered the best time to make a deal, sign a document or to send a confession note.

Apart from the time of the day Vata age is old age and Vata month is rainy season. This is one reason that we always pay attention to the advice of the elderly.

All about the Tea

When we speak of tea, it is commonly assumed to be black tea with milk and sugar. However, the word ‘Tea’ means any herb. This means even hot Tulsi water is Tulsi tea or hot mint water is Mint tea. Many herbs can be converted into tea such as jasmine tea, lemon tea, lemon grass tea, masala tea, sounf tea etc.

When the leaves are boiled in water and reduced to 50%, it is called Kadha (decoction). Black tea without milk and sugar is much healthier than black tea with milk and sugar.

Classical tea without sugar and milk has an astringent taste. But according to Ayurveda, this is good for health as it reduces Kapha imbalance. When sugar and milk are added, both of which have sweet taste, they neutralize the weight-reducing and kapha–relieving properties of the black tea. Therefore, milk or sugar should not be added to tea. For the purpose of taste, one can add Gur or jaggery or artificial plant sweetener Stevia.

Black tea is also a mild diuretic and increases urination as it contains caffeine, which is also a stimulant. This is the reason why tea is used when there is a need to stay awake. In this regard, coffee is stronger than tea. When taken in moderation, black tea is good for the heart and general health. If one has to choose tea then jasmine, lemon and lemongrass teas are better.

In Ayurveda, different teas have been prescribed for different personalities. Therefore, you can get vata–pacifying tea, pitta–pacifying tea and kapha–pacifying tea.

About thyroid gland

  • Low functioning thyroid is a new epidemic of the society affecting more than 3% of people. If thyroid function is low, it causes weight gain, loss of energy, cold intolerance and menstrual irregularities in women.
  • All people who are aged 50 and above should have their thyroid profile (TSH test) done to look for thyroid deficiency.
  • In younger people, or in cases of infertility, menstrual irregularity, pregnancy, weight gain, one should check for thyroid deficiency.
  • Iodized salt should be used to prevent thyroid deficiency.
  • Non–iodized salt is only used in two conditions: firstly in patient with thyroid inflammation and secondly, while doing Jalneti in naturopathy, a yoga–related nasal wash technique.
  • In pregnancy, even mild thyroid deficiency can affect the growth of fetus hence dose requirement of thyroid medicine is much higher in pregnancy than in non–pregnancy.
  • In the elderly, the dose of thyroid medicine to be started is always low as compared to one in the adults.
  • If thyroid deficiency is untreated, osteoporosis (thickening of bone) and/or atrial fibrillation (irregular and fast heart rate) may result. Osteoporosis can cause recurrent fractures and atrial fibrillation may cause brain paralysis.
  • In allopathic medicine, thyroid deficiency is treated by synthetic T4 hormone replacement. In TFSP, thyroid extracts are available, which contain both T4 and T3 potential drugs.
  • In Ayurveda, thyroid stimulant drugs are available but they are effective only if some amount of thyroid gland is available.
  • As per Ayurveda, eating soya and drinking water from copper vessel is good for thyroid.
