  • Seizure is a sudden change in behavior that is the consequence of brain dysfunction.
  • Approximately 0.5-1% of the population has epilepsy.
  • Some seizures are provoked, i.e., that occur in the metabolic derangement, drug or alcohol withdrawal and in situations like acute paralysis or acute encephalitis. Such patients are not considered to have epilepsy because these seizures would not recur in the absence of the provocation.
  • Less than 50% of epilepsy cases will have an identifiable cause such as head trauma, brain tumor, paralysis, infection, brain malformation, etc.
  • Having one seizure does not always mean that the patient would always get a seizure.
  • One episode of seizure may not require treatment.
  • Hospitalization is required in the first seizure only if it is associated with prolonged post-seizure altered level of consciousness.
  • Patients with unprovoked seizure may not be allowed to drive for some time.
  • In children, seizure can occur with high grade fever.
  • In adults, the first episode of seizure may be due to worms in the brain. In such a situation, it may be necessary to do an MRI test.
  • A patient with seizure can get married, live a normal life and produce children.
  • It is a misnomer that during a fit, you need to make the person smell a shoe.
  • During a seizure, use a spoon instead to prevent tongue bite. Never put the fingers inside the mouth of the patient as you could be bitten.
  • A patient with epilepsy fall will have stiffness in the body; on the contrary, a patient with cardiac loss of consciousness will fall loose.
  • A seizure that lasts for more than 5-10 minutes requires specialized attention.

“Vasudhaiva kutumbakam” (the whole world is one family) and “Ekam Sat Viprah Bahudavanti” (truth is one but the wise call it by various names) are two basic statements, which come from the ancient Rig Veda and form the fundamentals of Vedic philosophy.

One should do one’s duty with devotion and discipline. This principle can be remembered as the principle of three Ds.

In daily routine ‘one should remember the purpose for which one is born, which is to fulfil Dharma (duty), Artha (wealth), Kama (desire) and Moksha (liberation). To achieve them, one needs to follow the four Fs: (i) Follow the teacher; (ii) Face the negative devils of the mind; (iii) Fight till the end; and (iv) Finish at the goal.

The essence of Bhagwad Gita can be summarized in one shloka (Chapter 2.48) where Krishna says to Arjuna “yogastha kuru karmani”, which means ‘concentrate on actions’ (do all actions while remaining in yoga). He further says that one should take success and failure in the same stride. (yogastha = steadfast in yoga, kuru = perform, karmani = duties or action).

To acquire spiritual health, one should follow three Ss which are: (i) Satsang (company of good people) (ii) Sadhana (hard work), and (iii) Sanskar (good deeds). Adi Shankaracharya in Bhaj Govindam describes them as Satnam or Simran (bhakti, or reciting the name of their God), Satsang (company of good people) and Seva (good karmas).

Before doing any work, one should follow the principles of three Hs: (i) listen with the Head; (ii) follow the Heart to choose one of the choices; and (iii) order the Hands to take an action.

The ABCs of a good professional are Availability, Behavior and Competence. Competence comes last; the first is the availability of the professional.

An action should be based on Truth; it should be coming from consciousness and should end in internal bliss. Various Vedic literatures have termed this triad by different names like satha, chitha, ananda, and satyam, shivam, sundaram.

The Science of Power

Power is the ability to influence others to get a work done the way you want it.

We have seen evolution in the way power works. There was a time when Brahmins ruled using the power of knowledge; then came the era of Kshatriyas, who ruled using the physical power. This was followed by the era of Vaishya ruling the world with the power of money and a time will come when Shudras will rule with the power of their work.

In one of his lectures, Deepak Jain from Kellogg’s said that the world has seen eras of physical power, economic power and the time has come that it will now be ruled by the power of human resources.

Former Governor of Mizoram, A R Kohli, in one of his talks, said that there are four types of powers which govern the universe and these are – physical power, economic power, the power of the chair (ego) and the power of the human resource, which is based on consciousness.

Everyone has these four inherent powers. The physical power is based on fear, tamas and rajas. The economic and the power of chair are linked to one’s ego and rajas. It is the power of human resource which is linked to the soul, consciousness and satva.

The physical power is at the level of body, economic power is at the level of mind, the power of chair is at the level of intellect and ego and the power of human resources is at the level of soul. It is the power of human resource which is based on Dharma and is universally accepted by all religions.

As per Mahabharata, the powers are the power of human resource (righteousness or Yudhishthir), power to remained focused (Arjun), power to fight injustice (Bheem), power to help others (Sahdev) and power to remain neutral during any adversity (Nakul).

In Vedic sciences, these powers are also defined as Ichhashakti (the power of desires to be with the consciousness), Kriyashakti (the power to do selfless work), Gyanshakti (the power to learn about consciousness), Chitta shakti (the power to take consciousness-based decisions) and Anand shakti (the power for inner happiness).

The power of human resources talks about cultivating relationships. It is not based on the principles of survival of the fittest, which is an animal behavior. The power of human resource believes in training and developing everyone to survive and become the fittest of the fit.

‘Food is Brahman’ is a Vedic Upanishad and Bhagavad Gita saying.

Brahma is consciousness, therefore, food is consciousness. Though the traditional Vedic teaching has been that consciousness is present in everything, yet only food is considered Brahman. We never say that stone is Brahman nor dog is Brahman.

As per Chandogya Upanishad (6.15.1) at the time of death, our Vak Vritti (motor senses) merges into Karma Indriyas or manovritti (sensory senses, mind, intellect, ego and memory) and that now merges with Prana (Udana Vayu) and finally this merges into Tejas which leaves the body to merge into the Sat.

Vak Vritti, Manovritti and Prana Vritti, in the form of vibrations in the atmosphere, come back through rain and are taken by the plants to become plant consciousness. Therefore, as per Chandogya Upanishad, the consciousness of the Brahman moves from human to plants and plants to human.

The plant food, once eaten and absorbed, enters into the human body and ultimately makes Prana, Tejas, Ojas, sperms and ova. Through sperm and ova, it enters into the next life.

If this theory is correct, then food makes the consciousness and consciousness makes food. This also further proves that vegetarian food, as it is full of Brahman, creates a satvik mind and takes one towards spirituality.

The Tamsik food, which is dead and devoid of consciousness, does not lead to a healthy mind as it may produce Mal (waste) or make flesh but will not make essence.

As per Chandogya Upanishad, fiery foods make Karma Indriyas, earthy foods make Gnan Indriyas and Water in food makes Prana.

It further emphasizes upon the fact that one should eat freshly cut fruits and vegetables as far as possible as life or consciousness in them can only stay for some time (as per Jainism up to 48 minutes).

You Cannot Hate Strangers

You can only hate somebody whom you have loved. Hatred, therefore, is withdrawal of love.

Love is the opposite of fear and not hate. Most of us assume that love and hatred are opposite to each other but hatred is withdrawal of love and manifestation of fear; it’s not opposite.

In spirituality, you cannot have love and fear together. Love means being in touch with your consciousness. Love is total absence of fear.

As per mythology, there are only two emotions and they are emotions of love and emotions of fear. All other emotions are their sub-categories. For example, love can be categorized into joy, peacefulness, happiness, forgiveness. Fear, on the other hand, can give rise to hatred, depression, guilt, inadequacy, discontentment, prejudice, anger, etc.

In Ayurveda, fear is linked with Vata disorder, Pitta with anger and Kapha with attachment and possessiveness.

Again, as per Ayurveda, fear is linked with large intestine, pitta with small intestine and kapha with stomach and upper GI systems.

Fear in Vedic sciences is linked with Mooldhara Chakra, the first chakra with the sound LUM and love is linked to the Heart, the fourth Heart Anhata Chakra with its sound Yum. In terms of Vedic sciences, in Chakra meditation, Mooldhara chakra has the opposite characteristics of Anhata or Heart Chakra. Therefore, the sounds LUM and YUM are often chanted together.

Fear and love have different chemistry. Fear is based on adrenaline and love is based on endorphins. Fear is related to adrenaline based fight and flight.

The most important fear in body is fear of death. If that fear goes, one attains spirituality.

In the Sikh prayer “Ik Onkaar Sat Naam Kartaa Purakh Nirbh-a-o Nirvair Akaal Moorat Ajoonee Saibhn Gur Parsaad Jap…………”

‘Nirbhay’ means free of fear. Once one is in touch with consciousness, the fear goes away.

When there is fear, there is no love and when there is no love, there is fear. Fear and love cannot be experienced at the same time.

Ganga, Jamuna and Saraswati, the trio sangam in Allahabad is believed to be the holiest place in the country where taking a dip can wash away all past sins. After death, ashes are also submerged in Ganga water with an assumption that the past sins will be removed.

In Vedic era what was the intention of the rishis and munis while making this ritual?

In mythology, moon represents cool mind and Ganga represents the positive flow of thoughts. And sea turmoil indicates the disturbed state of mind. Hanuman ki samudra yatra indicates the meditative journey through the flow of thoughts. Samudra manthan represents the journey of the mind during meditation.

Taking a dip can be equated to shifting your mind towards your consciousness, which can happen when you introspect in a relaxed state of mind or when you practice meditation. Meditation is defined as a journey from sympathetic and parasympathetic state of mind or a journey from disturbed state of consciousness to undisturbed state of consciousness. Every time you meditate, you dip into your consciousness and clean your guilt and negative thoughts. It is something like reformatting your hard disk and removing the bad sectors and viruses in your software. It is, therefore, possible for you to do Ganga snan (bath) at your house in the morning while meditating or during pooja by drifting away from disturbed state of mind to non disturbed relaxed state of mind clearing your guilt and negative thoughts.

What is the importance of silence?

True silence is the silence between thoughts and represents the true self, consciousness or the soul. It is a web of energized information ready to take all provided there is a right intent. Meditation is the process of achieving silence.

Observing silence is another way of deriving benefits of meditation. Many yogis in the past have recommended and observed silence now and then. Mahatma Gandhi used to spend one day of each week in silence. He believed that abstaining from speaking brought him inner peace and happiness. On all such days he communicated with others only by writing on paper.

Hindu principles also talk about a correlation between mauna (silence) and shanti (harmony). Mauna Ekadashi is a ritual followed traditionally in our country. On this day the person is not supposed to speak at all and observes complete silence all through the day and night. It gives immense peace to the mind and strength to the body. In Jainism, this ritual has a lot of importance. Nimith was a great saint in Jainism who long ago asked all Jains to observe this vrata. Some people recommend that on every ekadashi one should observe silence for few hours, if not the whole day.

In his book, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Deepak Chopra talks in great detail about the importance of observing silence in day to day life. He recommends that everyone should observe silence for 20 minutes every day. Silence helps to redirect our imagination towards self. Even Swami Sivananda in his teachings recommends observation of mauna daily for 2 hours. For ekadashi, take milk and fruits every day, study one chapter of Bhagawad Gita daily, do regular charity and donate one-tenth of your income in the welfare of the society.

Ekadashi is the 11th day of Hindu lunar fortnight. It is the day of celebration, occurring twice a month, meant for meditation and increasing soul consciousness. Vinoba Bhave was a great sage of our country known for his Bhoodaan movement. He was a great advocator and practical preacher of mauna vrata.

Mauna means silence and vrata means vow; hence, mauna vrata means a vow of silence. Mauna was practiced by saints to end enmity and recoup their enmity. Prolonged silence as the form of silence is observed by the rishi munis involved for prolonged periods of silence. Silence is a source of all that exists. Silence is where consciousness dwells. There is no religious tradition which does not talk about silence. It breaks the outward communication and forces a dialogue towards inner communication. This is one reason why all prayers, meditation and worship or any other practice whether we attune our mind to the spiritual consciousness within are done in silence. After the death of a person it is a practice to observe silence for two minutes. The immediate benefit is that it saves a tremendous amount of energy.

Silence is cessation of both sensory and mental activity. It is like having a still mind and listening to the inner mind. Behind this screen of our internal dialogue is the silence of spirit. Meditation is the combination of observing silence and the art of observation.

Direct all your energy towards the soul and not the ego

The epic Mahabharata can also be understood as a science of inner Mahabharata that occurs in everybody’s mind.

Lord Krishna symbolizes the consciousness and the five Pandavas, the five positive qualities of a person namely, righteousness (Yudhishthir), focus (Arjuna), power to fight injustice (Bheem), helping others (Sahdev) and learning to be neutral in difficult situations (Nakul). Panchali indicates the five senses, which can only be controlled when these five forces are together.

Dhritarashtra symbolizes ignorance, Duhshasan – a negative ruling quality (dusht while ruling) and Duryodhana (dusht in yudh) symbolizes one who is not balanced in war.Conscious-based decisions need to be taken to kill the negativity in the mind. Every action, if directed towards the consciousness or the soul, is the right action. To kill all the 100 Kauravas (the 100 negative tendencies a person can have) controlled by Duryodhan and Duhshasan along with Shakuni (the negative power of cunningness), positive qualities have to be redirected towards consciousness and then take right decisions.

The five Pandavas (positive qualities) made soul (Lord Krishna) as their point of reference (Sarthi) and won over the evils (Kauravas).

Bhishma Pitamah, Karna and Dronacharya, individually all had winning powers; but, they all supported negative thoughts and made Duryodhana as their point of reference and ultimately had to die.

The message is very clear, if one directs his or her positive powers towards ego as the reference point in long run, they will be of no use and, in fact, will be responsible for one’s destruction.

Ravana too was a great scholar but he directed all his energies and powers towards his ego and ended up in misery.

Therefore, one should cultivate a positive mental attitude, positive thoughts instead of directing them towards desire, attachment or ego and should direct them to soul/consciousness for a positive outcome.

No Aarti is performed without camphor. Camphor, when lit, burns itself out completely without leaving a trace of it.

Camphor represents our inherent tendencies or vasanas. When lit by the fire of knowledge about the self, the vasanas burn themselves out completely, not leaving a trace of ego.

Ego is responsible for a sense of individuality that keeps us separate from the Lord or consciousness.

Camphor when burns, emits a pleasant perfume. This signifies that as we burn our ego we can only spread love and nothing else.
