Somebody once asked Lord Buddha, “After meditating for years, I have not been able to gain anything.” Then Lord Buddha asked, “Did you lose anything?” The disciple said, “Yes, I lost my anger, desires, expectations and ego.” Buddha smiled and said, “That is what your gain is by meditating.”

To be happy, one must learn to let go the following:

  • Let go of your desires. In Amarnath Ki Yatra, Lord Shiva firstly let go of the Bull, which represents the sexual desires. In Hanuman ki Lanka yatra, desires are represented by Samhiki, a creature who used to catch birds by their shadow. Hanuman killed the desires. So, it is possible to kill your desires. Again in Ramayana, desires are linked to Rajsik mind and in mythology, Meghnath represents the Rajsik mind. Meghnath was killed by Lakshman, the determined mind. Therefore, one should let go of the desires by killing them by focused concentration of the mind on the desires.
  • Let go of your expectations. In Amarnath Ki Yatra, the second thing which Lord Shiva discarded was the moon, which in mythology symbolizes letting go of expectations.
  • Let go of your ego. In mythology, ego represents Kansa in Krishna era and Ravana in Rama era. Both were killed by Krishna and Rama respectively, who symbolize the consciousness. Ego can never be killed by the mind and can only be killed by the consciousness (conscious-based decisions). Ego is also represented by Sheshnaag and we have Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu both having a Sheshnaag each with a mouth downwards indicating the importance of controlling one’s ego. Also remember never to hurt somebody’s ego. Hurting somebody’s ego in terms of allegations of sexual misconduct, financial corruption or abusing one’s caste is never forgotten and carries serious implications. In Hanuman Ki Lanka Yatra, ego is represented by Sursa; Hanuman managed her by humility and not by counter ego. In Naag Panchami also, we worship Naag, the ego, by folded hands and by offering milk.
  • Let go of your inaction. One should learn to live in the present. In Hanuman Ki Lanka Yatra, Hanuman first meets Menak Mountain, which indicates destination to rest. One should never do that and wilfully divert his or her mind towards action.
  • Let go of your attachments. Let go of your attachments to your close relatives and the worldly desires. In Amarnath Ki Yatra, Lord Shiva first leaves Bull (desires), moon (expectations), sheshnaag (ego) and then he gives up Ganesha and worldly desires (five elements). In mythology, this is practiced as detached attachment and in Bhagavad Gita is equated to Lotus. In Islam, detached attachment is practiced in the form of Bakra Eid.
  • Let go of your habit of criticizing, complaining and condemning people. One should always practice non-violent communication and speak which is truth, necessary and kind. One should not criticize, condemn or complain about people, situation and events. Wayne Dyer said, “The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you do not know anything about.”
  • Most of us often condemn people without knowing their capabilities and label them as unmatchable to us. One should also let go habit of gossiping as it is a form of violent communication.
  • Let go of your habit of blaming others: One should learn to take the responsibilities and people believe in team work. Good leader is the one who learns to be responsible in life.
  • Let go of your need to be always right: It is a form of ego. Remember, in arguments either you can win arguments or relationships. Always try to win relationship and not arguments.
  • Let go of your need to control situations, events and people: Learn to accept people as they are. The world is won by those who let this habit go.
  • Let go of your habit and the need to impress others: This is also a type of ego where we always seek appreciation.
  • Give up your belief that you cannot do it: Remember ‘IMPOSSIBLE’ is ‘I M POSSIBLE’. A belief is not an idea held by the mind but it is an idea that holds the mind. (Elli Roselle).
  • Give up your resistance to change: Remember change is the only constant which will happen and always welcome it. Joseph Campbell once said that one should follow one’s bliss and will open doors to your where there are only walls.
  • Let go of your fear and all negative thoughts: Remember, the mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. It becomes very destructive if used badly. (Eckhart Tolle).
  • Let go of your habit of giving excuses.
  • Let go of always being in the past.

On 1st Navratri Let Go Your Desires

“Mantra: On the first day we control (riding), our desires (bull) by balancing (Trishul) the mind with cool thoughts (moon) and practicing detachment (lotus). This can be assisted by chanting LAM focusing on sacral chakra”

Navratri is the detoxification of body, mind and soul. Body detoxification means:

  1. Eating less.
  2. No cereals. You can take wheat grass juice.
  3. Eating once if possible.
  4. Satvik lifestyle.

In Navratri diet

  1. Wheat flour is replaced with Kuttu or Singhara flour.
  2. Pulses are replaced with amaranth or Rajgiri.
  3. Rice with Samak rice.

Mental and soul detoxification can be done by practicing Yoga Sadhna as described in nine forms of Durga.

Shailputri is worshipped on the first day of Navratri.

As per mythology, Mata Shailputri is daughter of the mountain king, Himalaya. She is the first among nine avatars of Durga.

In Yogashastra, she represents the lowest Muladhara chakra. The bija sound to chant is LAM in the sacral root area. In Allopathy, she represents activation of sacral autonomic plexus.

The Goddess has a half moon on her forehead and is depicted holding a trident (trishul) in her right hand and a lotus flower in her left hand. She rides on Nandi, a bull.

Shailputri represents the shakti or power of the root chakra, who, upon awakening, begins Her journey upwards in search for the last crown chakra (Shiva).

Bull in mythology represents ‘desires’. On the first day we must let go our desires. Trishul represents balancing Tamas, Rajas and Satwa. Lotus represents practicing detached attachment. We are required to donate all Rajsik and Tamsik foods and items so that we are not attracted during Navratra. Moon symbolizes thinking with a cool mind.

In Navratri pooja on the first day, yogis keep their mind concentrated on Muladhara chakra as the starting point of spiritual discipline or Yoga Sadhna.

What to do on first day

  • Let go your desires
  • Keep the mind cool
  • Practice detached attachment
  • Balance Tamas and Rajas guna with Satwa or to stay in balance.
  • Concentrate on Muladhara chakra (sacral root)
  • Chant LAM reducing the respiratory rate to 2-4 per minute.
  • In Ayurveda, muladhara chakra represents the earth element (attachments).

Most temples represent God or the spirit or the deity located in the temple or mandir situated in an area at the outskirts of the city. A spiritual atmosphere is one that is devoid of pollution and which promotes rajasik or tamasik behavior. The silence of the spiritual atmosphere reduces the internal noise and helps us onward in our inner journey. The inner journey of being in touch with one’s consciousness requires detachment from worldly pleasures and the withdrawal of the five senses of the body.

To be in touch with one’s consciousness, one needs to bypass the disturbed state of consciousness controlled by emotion, memories and desires, through mind, intellect and ego. This usually requires a prolonged period of persistence and undertaking the inward journey devoid of external stimuli. The parikrama, which means “the path surrounding something”, incorporating many long walks helps to detoxify the mind and thus shifts the consciousness from a disturbed state to an undisturbed, calm state.

A long walk not only offers physical benefits but one also gets the benefits of nature as one’s inner stimuli are exposed to the outer stimuli during the parikrama. The person is often required to walk bare foot on natural ground, inhale pure air and concentrate and listen to the sounds of the nature, birds and trees. This proximity to nature helps in the inward spiritual journey and shifts one from the sympathetic to parasympathetic mode described by lowering of blood pressure and pulse rate. The final happiness invariably comes from within us at the time of final darshan when a person invariably closes his eyes and experiences God within his heart.

Most temples today are being constructed in residential colonies and provide a holy atmosphere to people right at their doorstep. However, they do not have the same spiritual significance and benefits as a temple located at the outskirts of a city.

There is no way a person can go to a temple in the vicinity of his house and detoxify his mind as this can hardly be achieved in minutes unless you are a siddha yogi, and if you are one, you need not go to a temple as the temple is within you.

In Vedic texts, it has been clearly mentioned that to acquire powers and inner happiness, rishi, munis had to do tapasya for months and years together. This tells us that spiritual well-being is acquired over an extended period of time as the process of detoxification is a long drawn process. Cars and other vehicles should not be allowed near temples as the basic motive is to have a pollution-free atmosphere and to give time and space for the mind to detoxify.

Search for Happiness in the Present Moment

Happiness should not be considered as being synonymous with pleasure. Pleasure is transient and is always associated with pain later on. Any transient addiction to any of the five senses will either lead to pleasure or pain. Pleasure leads to attachment resulting in more intense and greater desires, and if these are not fulfilled, they cause pain, which manifests as anger, irritability or even a physical disease. This type of transient pleasure is chosen by the individuals who attach themselves not only to the actions, but also to its results. The soul, which is an energized field of information and energy, is controlled by the person’s action, memory and desire. With every action, a memory is created which either gets stored or is recirculated again as an action. If one does not control the desires, the recurrent actions may cause more problems than happiness. True happiness, on the other hand, is internal happiness or the happiness of the soul or of the consciousness. It is often said, “You are what you eat, you are what you think and you are what you do.” Hence, your own internal happiness will vary with what you eat, think, and do. Being in the present moment leads to true happiness. If one laments about the past or keeps fearing about the future all the time, you will never be able to live in the present. Not living in the present is bound to cause unhappiness. One should learn to live and enjoy the present, which can only be done by attaching oneself to the actions and not to its results. Doing one’s duty with devotion and discipline also helps one to remain in the present. Performing good action is important, but it is equally important to maintain the purity of the mind at the same time. Because any intention in the thought creates the same chemical reaction as when the actual deed is done, abusing a person in thought is the same as abusing him in person. Cultivating positive actions in day–to–day life, like, giving or sharing etc., helps in acquiring internal happiness. Thoughts ultimately get metabolized into various chemicals and hormones changing the internal biochemistry of the person; hence, by thinking about cancer all the time, one can actually induce it over a period of time. And similarly, cancers can be cured by thinking positive over a period of time. Internal happiness gives a deep feeling of satisfaction and is not associated with any transient chemical changes which are generally associated with bodily pleasure activities. People who are internally happy are always contented and are devoid of jealousy, anger, irritability, greed and ego. One should learn to disassociate from, both, external pain as well as pleasure, and only then can one acquire true internal happiness

Why do we apply holy ash?

Bhasma is the holy ash produced from the Homa the sacrificial fire wherein special wood along with ghee and other herbs are offered as a part of pooja. By the time a Bhasma is formed no trace of original matter remains in the ash. Ash obtained from any burnt object is not bhasma. The ritual involves worshipping the deity by pouring ash as abhishek and then distributing it as Bhasma which is then applied on the forehead usually upper arms chest or rubbed all over the body. Some consume a pinch of Bhasma when they receive it. The word Bhasma is derived from bha or bhartsanam to destroy and sma or smaranam to remember . It denotes that by which our sins are destroyed and the Lord is remembered . Bhasma is also called vibhuti which means glory. Bhasma is associated with Lord Shiva who applies it all over His body. Spiritually the Homa is the offering of oblations into the fire with sacred chants and signifies offering or surrender of the ego and egocentric desires into the fire of knowledge. The resultant ash signifies the purity of the mind. The fire of knowledge burns the oblation and wood signifying ignorance and inertia respectively. The application of ash implies that one should burn false identification with the body. Bhasma has medicinal values in Ayurveda. It is supposed to be the strongest of all Ayurveda preparations. According to Ayurveda a Bhasma is formed when the matter is converted into non matter by the process of homa. The non matter is the spirit or the energy of the matter being processed with strong healing powers. It has the same significance as any potentised medicine in homoeopathy. It absorbs excess moisture from the body and prevents colds and headaches. When applied with a red spot at the centre the mark symbolizes Shiva Shakti the unity of energy and matter that creates the entire seen and unseen universe . Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha of Medical Profession

The eras of Ram and Krishna represent two different perceptions of life. While Rama taught us the message of truthfulness Krishna taught us when not to speak the truth and when speaking a lie is justified. The medical profession today cannot survive on the principles of Rama. According to principles of Krishna a truth which if spoken may cause harm to someone and if not spoken does not cause any harm may not be spoken. Similarly a lie which without harming the community may help a particular person or situation may be spoken. Doctors come across situations every day in their medical practice where speaking the truth may be harmful to the patient. Quite often false hopes are given and patients of terminal cancer are not told about their exact nature of illness and the prognosis. There is no way a doctor is going to tell the patient that you are going to die in the next 24 hours even if it is medically true. Dharma artha kama and moksha are the four basic purposes of life for which we are born. The basic purpose of life is to fulfill our desires in such a way that we end up in inner happiness. Fulfillment of desires should be done by following the principles of righteous or ethical earning. Most charges in the hospital settings are different depending upon the categories chosen by the patient. A single room patient invariably has to pay more than a patient admitted in the concessional three bed room or general ward. Even the charges of the treatment operation theatre investigations and consultations may be different depending upon the categories. Taking more money from the rich and helping the poor. This principle is more according to Krishna s principle than Rama s. Placebo therapy is a well established therapy in medical science which means treating the patient without giving the actual drug to a patient. The information that the drug does not contain any ingredient is withheld from the patient in this type of therapy. As per the literature 35 of illnesses and symptoms may resolve using a placebo and is based on the principle that the very feeling that a medicine is being given stimulates the inner body pharmacy and produces healing substances and chemicals. Nocebo effect on the other hand means that if the patient is told that your illness is not going to be cured even if medicines are given they may not act as the patient s body produces negative chemicals which neutralize the effect of medicines that otherwise are effective. Indian doctors were known for their social medicine which involves proper assessing of patients and their families financial status before deciding the treatment. There is no point giving options to a family to spend 10 15 lakhs of rupees for getting an ICD device implanted in the heart which may increase life span only by 1 or 2 years or improve quality of life for a few years to a family who cannot afford this amount of money and may have to sell their house or spend all the money saved for the marriage of their daughters. But today with the Consumer Protection Act applicable to the medical profession also not informing the family may even amount to negligence. Science behind regrets

In a US based study dying people were asked about their regrets if any. The top five regrets were I wish I had the courage to live a life I wanted to live and not what others expected me to live. I wish I had worked harder. I wish I had the courage to express my feelings. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. I wish I had let myself to be happier. Regrets are always based on suppression of emotions or non fulfillment of desires and needs. These need based desires can be at the level of physical body mind intellect ego or the soul. Therefore regrets can be at any of these levels. I did a survey of 15 of my patients and asked them a simple question that if they come to know that they are going to die in next 24 hours what would be their biggest regret. Only one of them a doctor said that she would have no regrets. Only one person expressed a physical regret and that was from a Yoga expert who said that her regret was not getting married till that day. Mental regrets were two. A state trading businessman said I wish I could have taken care of my parents. A homeopathic doctor said I wish I could have given more time to my family. Intellectual regrets were three. A lawyer said I wish I could have become something in life. A businessman said I wish I could have helped more people. A retired revenue inspector said I wish I had married off my younger child. Egoistic regrets were two. One fashion designer said I wish I could have become a singer. A housewife said I wish I could have become a dietician. Spiritual regrets were six. A Consultant Government Liaison officer said I wish I could have made my family members happy. A businessman said I wish I could have meditated more. A Homeopathic doctor said I wish I could have spent more time with my family. A reception executive said I wish I could have spent more time with my parents. An entertainment CEO said I wish I could have taken my parents for a pilgrimage. A fashion designer said I wish I could have worked more for the animals. In a very popular and successful movie Kal Ho Na Ho the hero was to die in the next 40 days. When asked to remember the days of his life he could not remember 20 ecstatic instances in life. This is what happens with each one of us where we waste all our days and cannot remember more than 50 or even 20 of such instances. If we are given 40 days to live and if we live every day ecstatically we can get inner happiness. Therefore we should learn to live in the present instead of having a habit of postponing everything we do. We should learn to prioritize our work and do difficult work first or else we would be in a state of constant worry till that work is over. I teach my patients that they should practice confession exercise and one confession is to talk about your regrets and take them as challenge and finish before the next Tuesday. When working there are three things which are to be remembered passion profession and fashion. Profession is at the level of mind ego and spirit. We should convert our profession in such a manner that it is fashionable and passionate. Passion means working from the heart and profession means working from mind and intellect and fashion means working the same at the level of ego which is based on show off. Bhai Dooj is celebrated two days after Diwali. Like Raksha Bandhan it’s a day dedicated to the sacred love between a brother and sister. Both Raksha Bandhan and Bhai Dooj festival falls in Chaturmas one at the start and the other at the end of this four months of negative state of mind. Jagannath Yatra (another festival of love between brother and sister where Krishna is worshipped with his sister Subhadra) is also held in Chaturmas. All three festivals also signifies purification of mind, getting it lust free and reminding the people a sacred relationship between men and women
The festival is known as “Bhav-Bij” in Marathi and “Bhai-Tika” in Nepal.
On Bhai Dooj, sisters pray for the wellbeing and prosperity of their brothers by putting tika/tilak (vermilion spot) on their forehead and offer sweets (healthy) and perform a ritual of taking their ‘Arti’. The brother offers gifts as an expression of love. Some sister may fast on this day; gifts often involve rice, new grass, aab’ (a length of flax, knotted into a circular shape and dotted with sugar batashas) etc. Rice in mythology symbolizes with fulfilled desires and again this ritual on this day signifies a non lust based sacred relationship between a man and a woman.

Hurting somebody’s ego in terms of allegations of sexual misconduct, financial corruption or abusing one’s caste is never forgotten and carries serious implications. In Hanuman Ki Lanka Yatra, ego is represented by Sursa; Hanuman managed her by humility and not by counter ego. In Naag Panchami also, we worship Naag, the ego, by folded hands and by offering milk. • Let go of your inaction. One should learn to live in the present. In Hanuman Ki Lanka Yatra, Hanuman first meets Menak Mountain, which indicates destination to rest. One should never do that and wilfully divert his or her mind towards action. • Let go of your attachments. Let go of your attachments to your close relatives and the worldly desires. In Amarnath Ki Yatra, Lord Shiva first leaves Bull (desires), moon (expectations), sheshnaag (ego) and then he gives up Ganesha and worldly desires (five elements). In mythology, this is practiced as detached attachment and in Bhagavad Gita is equated to Lotus. In Islam, detached attachment is practiced in the form of Bakra Eid. • Let go of your habit of criticizing, complaining and condemning people. One should always practice non-violent communication and speak which is truth, necessary and kind. One should not criticize, condemn or complain about people, situation and events. Wayne Dyer said, “The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you do not know anything about.” • Most of us often condemn people without knowing their capabilities and label them as unmatchable to us. One should also let go habit of gossiping as it is a form of violent communication. • Let go of your habit of blaming others: One should learn to take the responsibilities and people believe in team work. Good leader is the one who learns to be responsible in life. • Let go of your need to be always right: It is a form of ego. Remember, in arguments either you can win arguments or relationships. Always try to win relationship and not arguments. • Let go of your need to control situations, events and people: Learn to accept people as they are. The world is won by those who let this habit go. • Let go of your habit and the need to impress others: This is also a type of ego where we always seek appreciation. • Give up your belief that you cannot do it: Remember ‘IMPOSSIBLE’ is ‘I M POSSIBLE’. A belief is not an idea held by the mind but it is an idea that holds the mind. (Elli Roselle). • Give up your resistance to change: Remember change is the only constant which will happen and always welcome it. Joseph Campbell once said that one should follow one’s bliss and will open doors to your where there are only walls. • Let go of your fear and all negative thoughts: Remember, the mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Writing a Vedic Will – as I understand it

Sometimes back, I used to think that a ‘will’ simply meant how my finances would be controlled by my wife and my children after my death. As I started acquiring Vedic knowledge, my interpretation changed. Following is the gist for writing a Will, as I understand it the Vedic way. Of course, writing a will requires a sound state of mind, two witnesses, signed registered paper with accompanying, if possible audio-visual link.

• The first step is to calculate your life earnings. Your earnings are not only your finances earned but also the respect, dignity and image that you have earned in the society.

• Now the next step is to pay off your unpaid debts (Hrins). Apart from actual loans we have taken from banks, friends and others, there are three more debts (Hrins) which we need to pay before we die and define in our Will to be paid from our earning if we die unexpectedly. These as per mythology are Pitra Hrin, Dev Hrin and Rishi Hrin and mean that we have not been able to fulfill the committed desires of our ancestors and commitments made to our GOD and teachers respectively. All these debts, if unpaid, need to be paid out of the finances you are leaving at the time of death. A percentage of your finances, therefore, should be kept to pay these debts. These commitments are usually fulfilled by the eldest son and eldest daughter if there is no son or wife till she is alive.

• Rest of the finances need to be divided to fulfill your Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha or purpose for which you were born.

o Artha: A percentage of your finances should go and be equally divided within your immediate family. A percentage of this amount should be converted into a family trust account to be used for the minus 18 years of age children in future.

o Dharma: Dharma in literal meaning is to hold. A percentage of your finances should be kept into a reserve account and this account interest can be used by the family only if they stick to the code of family conduct (includes rituals, religious activities etc) you have created in your life and mentioned in the will or this amount may be given for charity as defined in your will.

o Kama and Moksha: Kama means the unfulfilled desires at the level of intellect and ego and Moksha the same at the level of our soul.

We must enlist both our desires at the level of mind and at the level of soul and a percentage of our finances should be converted into a trust or defined to fulfill these desires. The examples of desires at the level of soul are to do some charitable work without any publicity. The same at the level of ego are to open some dispensary, dharamshala etc. in our own name. You also need to fulfill and document your desired rituals at the time of death. These rituals must answer the following questions:

• Should my death be celebrated (band, lunch) as I have completed all my purposes of life?

• How should my death anniversary be celebrated or observed?

• How should my last rites be done?

Final Note: If my children and wife are not willing to take care of the finances other than Artha, I nominate the following persons to manage my finance to look after my other desires…….

As per mythology

Mata Shailputri is daughter of mountain king –Himalaya. She is the first among nine avatars of Durga and worshiped on the First day of Navratri. In Yogashstra she represents the lowest Muladhara chakra. The bija sound to chant is LAM in the sacral root area. In Allopathy she represents activation of sacral autonomic plexus.

The Goddess has a half moon in her forehead & holding a trident (trishul) in her right hand & lotus flower in her left hand.  She rides on Nandi a bull.

Shailputri represents the shakti or power of the root chakra, who, upon awakening, begins Her journey upwards in search for the last crown chakra (Shiva).

Bull in mythology represents ‘desires’. On the first day we must let go our desires. Trishul represents balancing Tamas, Rajas and Satwa. Lotus represents practicing detached attachment. We are required to donate all Rajsic and Tamsic foods and items so that we are not attracted during Navratre. Moon represents thinking with a cool mind.

In Navratri pooja on the first day Yogi keep their mind concentrated on Muladhara chakra as the starting point of spiritual discipline or Yoga Sadhna.

What to do on first day

1. Let go your desires

2. Keep the mind cool

3. Practice detached attachment

4. Balance Tamas and Rajas guna with Satwa or to stay in balance.

5. Concentrate on Muladhara chakra (sacral root)

6. Chant LAM reducing the respiratory rate to 2-4 per minute.

7. In Ayurveda Muladhara chakra represents the earth element (attachments).

Mantra

On the first day control (riding), your desires (bull) by balancing (Trishul) the mind with cool thoughts (moon) and practicing detachment (lotus). This can be assisted by chanting LAM focusing on sacral chakra.”

Amarnath cave was chosen by Lord Shiva to narrate the secrets of meditation, immortality and creation of Universe to Parvati.

A spiritual journey requires a spiritual frame of mind and a commitment of 7-10 days for self purification. Most spiritual destinations are located at up into mountains to provide a pollution free environment and involve a difficult travel so that nobody can reach the destination before 7-10 days.

This duration helps in controlling the mind, intellect, ego and getting rid of the desires, attachments and greed.

On the path of spiritual journey as one is travelling alone without carrying the worldly attachments one invariably reaches the destination in a positive state of mind and in a meditative phase to experience the truth of life and answers to unanswered questions.

The Amarnath Story

Once Parvati asked Shiva to let her know why and when he started wearing the beads of heads (Mund Mala). Shiva said whenever you are born I add one more head in my beads. Parvati said,” My Lord, my body is destroyed every time and I die again and again, but you are Immortal. Please let me know the secret of this.” Shiva replied that it is due to Amar Katha.”

Spiritual Significance

The spiritual significance of the above is, that here Shiva represents the Soul and Parvati the Body. The soul never dies and is immortal. The soul is the energized filed of information and in computer language is like the web of energized information. Every time any work is done (sanskara) a copy of the same is kept in the memory in both the soul and the spirit.

The further part of the story is the katha or the process of doing meditation and its benefits

 “Parvati insisted that she may be told that secret. For long Shiva continued postponing.  Finally on consistent demand He made up his mind to tell the immortal secret. He started for lonely place where no living being could listen it. He choseAmarnathCave.”

Spiritual Significance

For learning to meditate the first principle is dedication and persistence. Second is silence or a place with no internal and external disturbance. In asthanga yoga it is called Pratyahara (the withdraw of senses).

The story

“Shiva left His Nandi (The Bull) at Pahalgam or Bail Gaon; his moon from his hairs (jatha) at Chandanwari; his snake at the banks ofLakeSheshnag; his Son Ganesha at Mahagunas Parvat (Mahaganesh Hill) and his five elements at Panjtarni.

As a symbol of sacrificing the earthly world Shiva and Parvati had Tandav Dance. After leaving behind all these, Shiva enters theHolyAmarnathCavealong with Parvati. Lord Shiva takes his Samadhi on the Deer Skin and concentrate.

 Spiritual Significance

In process of meditation one first gets rid of desires (Bull Nandi or the mind), discriminating, expectations and power of analyzing thoughts power (moon or the intellect) and ego (snake). Once that is done one is away from the worldly desires totally (Ganesh and finally the five elements). Now the body is in symphony with the soul (Tandava dance).

The story

To ensure that no living being is able to hear the Immortal Tale, Shiva created Rudra named Kalagni and ordered him to spread fire to eliminate every living thing in and around theHolyCave. After this He started narrating the secret of immortality to Parvati. But as a matter of chance one egg which was lying beneath the Deer skin remained protected. It is believed to be non living and more over it was protected by Shiva -Parvati Asan (Bed). The pair of pigeons which were born out of this egg became immortal having listened the secret of immortality (Amar Katha).

Spiritual Significance

It again signifies the importance of undisturbed state of mind at the time of meditation. Fire indicates the internally meditation generated spiritual fire or agni which burns all the negative thoughts and negative energies. The egg of the pigeon indicates that spiritual knowledge can transform at the level DNA. It also tells us that those who are sitting near the meditating persons also get benefitted.

Once somebody asked Lord Buddha, “after meditating for years, I have not been able to gain anything.” Then Lord Buddha asked, “Did you lose anything?” and the disciple said, “yes, I lost my anger, desires, expectations and ego.” Buddha smiled and said, “That is what your gain is by meditating.”

To be happy, one must learn to let go the following:

1.      One should let go the desires. In Amarnath Ki Yatra, Lord Shiva firstly let go the Bull which represents the sexual desires. In Hanuman ki Lanka yatra, desires are represented by Samhiki which was a creature who used to catch birds by their shadow. Hanuman killed the desires. So, it is possible to kill your desires.

Again in Ramayana, desires are linked to Rajsic mind and in mythology, Meghnath represents the Rajsic mind. Meghnath was killed by Lakshman, the determined mind.

Therefore, one should let go the desires by killing them by focused concentration of the mind on the desires.

2.      Let go your expectations. In Amarnath Ki Yatra, the second thing which Lord Shiva discarded is moon which in mythology is symbolized by letting go of expectations.

3.      Let go your ego. In mythology, ego represents Kansa inKrishna era and Ravana in Rama era. Both were killed byKrishna and Rama respectively who symbolized the consciousness.

Ego can never be killed by the mind and only can be killed by the consciousness (conscious based decisions).

Ego is also represented by Sheshnaag and we have Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu both having a Sheshnaag each with a mouth downwards indicating the importance of controlling one’s ego.
