Stress is defined as the physical and mental reaction to the interpretation of a known situation. In absence of a known situation there cannot be a stress. One cannot be stressful for a person who has just died in New York in an accident unless he or she is a known person.

There has to be a right, conscience–based interpretation of the situation as the same situation can bring happiness to one and stress to the other.

The most important consequence of stress, physical or mental, therefore, depends on the right interpretation of the situation.

The interpretation or judgment in the body is governed by chemical reactions and is controlled by the balance of autonomic balance system, which in turn is governed by the interaction of parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.

During the phase of acute stress, when the sympathetic system is predominant, the heart rate and blood pressure increase and a person cannot take correct and decisive decision.

He or she is likely to make mistakes, which can often be detrimental to living. Sympathetic mode is basically the mode of flight or fight reactions of the body.

Right conscience–based decisions can only be taken in a state of relaxed mind when the intention is inserted in the field of consciousness. The relaxed state of the body is the parasympathetic mode, which is healing and is evident by reduction in heart rate, blood pressure and increase in the skin resistance. Most conscience-based decisions will be based on truthfulness, will be necessary and will bring happiness to both the persons and the surroundings.

The yogic lifestyle by which a person learns the dos and don’ts of living, does regular practice of correct postures, daily pranayama and practices regular withdrawal from the outer atmosphere, helps in preparing a state of physical and mental body state, which is more receptive for conscience-based decisions.

Prayers have no value when the mind is not at rest. All of us have participated in hundreds of mourning prayers with two minutes of silence. This prayer has no value if the two minutes of silence is not observed. If prayer is done without it, the mind will remain restless and we will keep on thinking these two minutes are not over yet.

The process of silence does shift our awareness towards parasympathetic state and temporarily we get to be in contact with the memories of the departed soul and we pay homage to him or her. Yoga asanas are different from exercises. They stimulate and stretch all or one of the seven charkas, autonomic plexuses, and ganglion and ductless endocrine glands. Also during a yogasana, the mind is in the exercise and not wandering here and there.

Yogic exercises at rest are termed yoga asanas and the same yogic meditative exercises with activity are called traditional Indian dances. Western exercises and dances do not follow the principles of yoga. Many international studies have shown that over one–third of the people during their lifetime pray either for their own illness or for somebody else.

All hospitals should have spirituals areas. The prayer and meditation rooms in a hospital setting invariably will provide an arena which will improve patient-doctor relationship and will reduce the rising disputes amongst them in the country.

Medically it has been proved that the subconscious mind of an unconscious person is listening. Any prayer therefore would be captured by the patient building inner confidence and faith to fight terminal sickness. We have seen the classical example of the effect of mass prayer on a person’s health in the case of Amitabh Bachchan’s illness.

About 90% of Americans and almost 100% Indians pray at some point in their lives, and when they’re under stress, such as when they’re sick, they’re even more likely to pray.

More than one-third of the people surveyed in a recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicinesaid they often turned to prayer when faced with medical concerns. In a poll involving more than 2,000 Americans, 75% of those who prayed said they prayed for wellness, while 22% said they prayed for specific medical conditions.

Numerous random studies have been conducted on this subject. In one such study, neither the patients nor the healthcare providers had any idea who was being prayed for. The coronary care unit patients didn’t even know there was a study being conducted. And, those praying for the patients had never even met them. The result: While those in the prayer group had about the same length of hospital stay, their overall health was slightly better than the group that didn’t receive special prayers.

“Prayer may be an effective adjunct to standard medical care,” wrote the authors of this 1999 study, also published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. However, a more recent trial from the April 2006 issue of the American Heart Journal suggests that it’s even possible for some harm to come from prayer. In this study, which included 1,800 people scheduled for heart surgery, the group who knew they were receiving prayers developed more complications from the procedure, compared to those who had not been a focus of prayer.

Many patients are reluctant and do not discuss this subject with their doctors. Only 11% patients mention prayer to their doctors. But, doctors are more open to the subject than the patients realize, particularly in serious medical situations. In a study of doctors’ attitudes toward prayer and spiritual behavior, almost 85% of the doctors thought they should be aware of their patients’ spiritual beliefs. Most doctors said they wouldn’t pray with their patients even if they were dying, unless the patient specifically asked the doctor to pray with them. In that case, 77% of the doctors were willing to pray for their patient.

Most people are convinced that prayer helps. Some people are ‘foxhole religious’ types and prayer is almost a reaction or cry to the Universe for help. However, many people do it because they’ve experienced benefit from it in the past.

If a patient wants to pray and feels it might be helpful, there’s no reason he should not. If he believes that prayer might work, then he should use it.

The relaxed mind state of the body is the parasympathetic mode which is healing and is evident by reduction in heart rate, blood pressure and increase in the skin resistance. Most conscious based decisions will be based on truthfulness, will be necessary and will bring happiness to both the persons and the surroundings.

The yogic lifestyle by which a person learns do’s and don’ts of living, does regular practice of correct postures,  indulges in daily  pranayama and practices regular withdrawal from the outer atmosphere, helps in preparing a state of physical and mental body state which is more receptive for conscious based decisions. Yoga Sutras of Patanajli included them in his asthanga yoga as the processes of Yama, Niyama, Asanas, Pranayama and Pratihyar.

Prayers have no value when the mind is not at rest. All of us have participated in hundreds of mourning prayers each lasting two minutes of silence. This prayer has no value if the two minutes of silence is not observed. If prayer is done without it the mind will remain restless and we will keep on thinking these two minutes are not over yet. The process of silence does shift our awareness towards test and parasympathetic state and temporarily we get to be in contact with the memories of the departed soul and we pay homage to him or her.

Today a large number of organizations are teaching the process of meditation but the same cannot be taught unless a person practices procedures by which the mind gets relaxed.

The eight limbs of patanjali focus in detail about pre-meditation preparations and once that is learned one can go to the other three limbs which are dharna, dhyana and Samadhi. .

Yoga asanas are different from exercises. They stimulate and stretch all or one of the seven charkas, autonomic plexuses, and ganglion and there located ductless endocrine glands. Also during a yogasana the mind is in the exercise and not wondering here and there.

While yogic exercises at rest are termed yoga asanas and the same yogic meditative exercises with activity are called traditional Indian dances. Western exercises and dances do not follow the principles of yoga. Many international studies have shown that over one-third of the people during their lifetime pray either for their own illness or for somebody else.

All hospitals should have spirituals areas. The prayer and meditation rooms in a hospital setting invariably will provide an arena which will improve patient-doctor relationship and will reduce the rising disputes amongst them in the country.

Inaugurating a symposium on prayer, faith, meditation and healing, Prof. B.M. Hegde, Chairman Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, Mangalore Kendra said that every hospital should have a prayer room where people from every religion can pray.

The symposium was organised by Heart Care Foundation of India jointly with Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan at Bhawan’s Auditorium and was participated by speakers from various religions.

Moderating the session, Padma Shri & Dr. BC Roy National Awardee, Dr. KK Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India said that often doctors get request from the patients and relations either to let them pray or have the doctors pray for them or with them. There are studies which show that prayer has a positive healing effect.

Dr. Aggarwal said that both prayer and meditation shifts one from sympathetic to parasympathetic mode and helps in healing. Positive faith in doctors and drugs also has a healing effect.

In a joint statement Mr. Ashok PradhanMr. G C GarekhanMr. J Veeraraghavanfrom Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan said that spiritually religions and cultural beliefs always play significant role in the lives of patients who are seriously ill and dying. They said that the wishes of the dying patients and their relations should be respected and their spiritual needs must be taken care of.

On the subject of praying with the patients Rev. Ivan Moses said that in Christianity dying patient’s request for the healthcare professional to pray with him or her is usually honoured. If the doctor is uncomfortable with the request to pray with the patient, he or she can sit by in silence as the patient prays in the patient’s language and tradition.

Maulana Dr. Mufti Mohammad Ahmad said that in Islam doctors may pray for patients and they are encouraged to. Islam also believes that patients should not only pray for themselves but also for other fellow patients.

Prof. Sunil Kumar and Dr Nirmal Jit Singh said that in Hinduism and Sikhism there are no specific guidelines issued to physicians praying together with the patients. But both religions believe in prayers when the person is sick.

Learn CPR- Sushil Shinde 

New Delhi: Sunday, 11 November 2012: On the concluding day of MTNL Perfect Health Mela being organised by Heart Care Foundation of India, India’s Home Minister Sh Sushil Shinde released the CPR 10 Mantra “Within 10 Miniutes of Cardiac arrest( earlier the better) for the next atleast 10 miniutes compress the centre of the chest with a speed of 100/min (10×10)”

Mr Shinde to the Mela Delegation led by Padmashri & Dr. BC Roy National Awardee, Dr. KK Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India said that CPR should be learned by everybody. He wished the CPR-10 initiative all the success.

The 19th Perfect Health Mela was formally closed on Sunday evening. Thousands of people participated and visited the Mela. Dr. (Prof.) Kiran Walia, Women & Child Department, Social Welfare Department and Languages in her message said that youngsters should not indulge into alcoholism. She said that the drug addiction is becoming a major problem in adolescents. Patient who indulges in substance abuse should be tackled gently and with care. She also said that menstruating women should take a weekly dose of folic acid.

Dr. KK Aggarwal said that the Mela has ended with a good note for the public as dengue is at its decline.
CPR 10 a draw at the Mela Following records were made
•       1050 students were trained in one session of multiple-rescuer CPR.
•       201 people were trained in one session of single-rescuer CPR.
•       Maximum people trained in one day were 2168.
•       96 children with special needs were trained in one session.
•       Total number of people trained more than 8500 people in CPR 10
Heritage Inter Dancing School Competition
Various classical dances like Bharatnatyam, Odissi and Kathak were organized as part of Heritage, the Inter Dance School Festival. The competitions were coordinated by Indian Oil Corporation.
•       Classical dance has effects like meditation.
•       Classical dancing should be part and parcel of school education.
•       People who indulge into classical dance have less lifestyle disorders.
Conference on Zoonoses 2012
Over 100 people participated in a conference on Zoonoses. The messages were:
•       Zoonoses is an animal disease, which can be transmitted to humans.
•       Humans are accidental hosts who acquire disease through close contact with an infected animal who may or may not be having a Zoonosis.
•       Children are at higher risk.
•       Pets can transmit bacterial, fungal and parasitic zoonoses.
•       The different routes of transmission may be saliva, respiratory secretions or through direct contact.
•       Saliva transmission can be through bites or contaminated scratches.
•       The risk of transmission can be reduced by simple precautions.
•       Owners should wash their hands following contact with their pets or cleaning of their cages.
•       Younger pets present a greater risk of diseases than older pets.
•       Pets should not be fed raw meat or eggs.
•       Pets should not be allowed to eat garbage.
•       Pets should not be allowed to drink surface water or toilet water.
•       Pets should be treated timely for diarrhea and dermatoses.
•       All dogs should be vaccinated for rabies.
National Workshop on pre-hospital care in heart attack
A national workshop on pre-hospital care in heart attack was organized in association with National Heart Institute. The faculty included Dr Vinod Sharma, Dr K K Aggarwal, Dr. Tushar Roy, Dr. Lokesh C Gupta, Dr.SK Modi, Dr. KC Goswami and Dr. Sameer Srivastava.

Facts released
In heart attack, at the onset of chest pain, one should chew a tablet of 300 gm of water soluble aspirin. This will reduce chances of death by 22%.
•       Any pain which can pinpointed by a finger is not a heart pain.
•       Any pain of less than 30 seconds duration is not a heart pain.
•       One should reach hospital within 90 minutes of heart attack to receive clot dissolving or clot removing therapy.
•       At the onset of heart attack, one should also be given stat dose of anti cholesterol medicine.
•       Burning in chest for the first time in life after the age of 40 should raise the suspicion of a heart attack.
•       Breathlessness after the age of 40 for the first time in life should not be ignored.
Live discussion on diabetes
A live discussion was held on Dilli Aajtak on diabetes. The faculty included Dr K K Aggarwal and Dr A K Jinghan. The star attraction was cricketer Mr Vijay Dahiya.
Facts about diabetes:
•       Fasting sugar of more than 90 can have cardiovascular involvement.
•       A1c of more than 6.5 is diagnostic of diabetes.
•       A1c testing should be done every three years.
•       Blood sugar along with blood pressure should be kept under control in all patients with diabetes.
•       If uncontrolled, diabetes can damage the heart, eyes, kidney and brain.

A cultural evening was organized where Sindhi singer Uma Lallo performed.

Symposium on Prayer, Health & Religion A symposium was organized on prayer, health and religion in association with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
The panelists included Prof. Sunil Kumar (Hinduism), Imam Umar Ahmed Iliyasi (Islam), Padri Kanasih G (Christianity), Bhikshu Purnima (Buddhism), Dr. AK Merchant (Bahai Faith), Dr. E A Malekar (Yahudi)
and Acharya Dr. Sadhvi Sadhna Ji Maharaj (Jainism). The session was moderated by Padma Shri & Dr. BC Roy National Awardee, Dr. KK Aggarwal, President of the Mela. Mr. J. Veeraraghavan delivered the
keynote address.
