If Lord Krishna was the first counselor who taught the principles of counseling, Lord Ganesha taught us the principles of stress management.

We should worship Lord Ganesha and become like him whenever we face any difficulty or are stressed out.

The elephant head of Lord Ganesha symbolizes that when in difficulty, use your wisdom, intelligence and think differently. It can be equated to the Third Eye of Lord Shiva. Elephant is supposed to be the most intelligent animal in the kingdom. Here, wisdom means to think before speaking. Lord Buddha also said that don’t speak unless it is necessary and is truthful and kind.

The big elephant ears of Lord Ganesha signify listening to everybody when in difficulty. Elephant ears are known to hear long distances. Elephant eye see a long distance and in terms of mythology, it represents acquiring the quality of foreseeing when in difficulty. The mouth of Lord Ganesha represents speaking less and hearing and listening more.

The big tummy of Lord Ganesha represents digesting any information gathered by listening to people in difficulty. The trunk denotes using the power of discrimination to decide from the retained information. It also indicates doing both smaller and bigger things by yourself. The elephant trunk can pick up a needle as well as a tree.

The teeth, broken and unbroken, signify to be in a state of balance in loss and gain. This implies that one should not get upset if the task is not accomplished and also not get excited if the task is accomplished. In times of difficulty, Ganesha also teaches us not to lose strength and control one’s attachments, desires and greed.

The four arms of Lord Ganesha represent strength. Ropes in two hands indicate attachment; Laddoo or Sweet in one hand represent desires and mouse represents greed. Riding over the mouse indicates controlling one’s greed.

Lord Ganesha is worshipped either when a new work is initiated or when one finds it difficult to complete a job or work. In these two situations, these principles of Lord Ganesha need to be inculcated in one’s habits.

Stress is the reaction of the body or the mind to the interpretation of a known situation. Stress management, therefore, involves either changing the situation, changing the interpretation or taming the body the yogic way in such a way that stress does not affect the body.

Every situation has two sides. Change of interpretation means looking at the other side of the situation. It is something like half glass of water, which can be interpreted as half empty or half full.

Studies have shown that anger, hostility and aggression are the new risk factors for heart disease. Even recall of anger has been reported to precipitate a heart attack.

Many studies have shown that when doctors talk positive in front of unconscious patients in ICU, their outcome is better than those in whose presence if doctors talk negative.

The best way to practice spiritual medicine is to experience silence in the thoughts, speech and action. Simply walking in the nature with silence in the mind and experiencing the sounds of nature can be as effective as 20 minutes of meditation. He said that 20 minutes of meditation provides the same physiological parameters as that of seven hours of deep sleep.

Inaugurating a 2-day 10th national summit on Stress Management and a workshop on “How to be Healthy and Happy”, Mr. Rakesh Mehta, Election Commissioner of Delhi said that meditation should be taught as a part of our school curriculum. Yoga, pranayama and meditation, if taught early, can take care of rising problems of diabetes, heart attack and blood pressure in the society.

Speaking on the occasion, Padma Shri & Dr. BC Roy National Awardee, Dr. KK Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India and Vice-Chairman, World Fellowship of Religions, said that by learning the Vedic lifestyle, one acquires the strength to bear any illness. Spiritual people develop disease but learn not to suffer from it. Ninety percent of happiness lies in our hands. One can choose to be happy and healthy either by making informed choices or re-experiencing the past experiences.

The seminar was organized by Heart Care Foundation of India jointly with Prajapati Brahmkumaris Aishwarya Vidyalaya, eMedinewS and World Fellowship of Religions at Om Shanti Retreat Centre, Pataudi Road, Manesar, Gurgaon.

BK Brij Mohan said that meditation and not medication is the answer for most of the lifestyle disorders. Rajyoga meditation is the answer for today’s stressful environment.

BK Asha said that even observing silence for 20 to 30 minutes a day can help one achieve inner happiness. BK Sapna present on the occasion said that meditation under a pyramid is much more powerful than under the sky.

Dr. Anil Goyal, President (Elect), Delhi Medical Association said that even doctors need to de-stress. The incidence of heart attack in doctors is no less than that in the general public. Doctors should practice what they preach.
