Women who eat a lot of meat are apt to weigh more than those who do not. Previous studies have consistently shown that vegetarians are lighter and have a lower body mass index than their omnivorous counterparts.

A study from Brigham Young evaluated 284 premenopausal women, an average of 40 years old, who did not smoke. The researchers separated the women into groups classified by low, moderate, and high meat intake per 1,000 calories consumed per day.

Over the 7-day study, the investigators found that the low-intake group ate less than 1.9 three-ounce servings of meat per day, as opposed to more than 3.18 servings for the high-intake group.

More than half (52.8%) of the women classified as having a high meat intake were obese, defined in this study as having greater than 35% body fat. Conversely, 37.3% of women in the moderate meat intake group were obese and only 15.6% of those in the low meat intake group were obese.

This was a cross-sectional study, so the findings do not show that meat causes obesity, while that could be the case; it could also be that obesity caused women to eat more meat – like more obese women following the Atkins diet, which is rich in meat.

There are a number of physiological mechanisms by which meat could fuel weight gain. Meat proteins may elevate insulin levels, and thereby growth factors, that could influence weight and percent body fat. It has also been shown that consumption of saturated fat – most of which comes from animal products – is associated with obesity.

It may be worth recognizing that eating less meat may be beneficial in a weight management program. It is possible to eat a healthy diet that is limited in meat. Alternative protein sources, such as lentils, nuts and legumes, can provide sufficient protein and actually be beneficial in dieting.

• Chest pain is still the most common sign of a heart attack for most women but women are more likely than men to have symptoms other than chest pain or discomfort when experiencing a heart pain. In a study published in Archives of Internal Medicine researchers examined 35 years of data that yielded 69 studies and found that, between 30 and 37 percent of women did not have chest discomfort during a heart attack. While, 17 to 27 percent of men did not experience chest discomfort.

• Older people are also more likely to have heart attack without chest discomfort. Absence of chest discomfort is a strong predictor for missed diagnosis and treatment delays.

• Women are also more likely than men to experience other forms of cardiac chest pain syndromes, such as unstable angina, and they appear to report a wider range of symptoms associated with acute coronary syndrome. They are more likely to report pain in the middle or upper back, neck, or jaw; shortness of breath; nausea or vomiting; indigestion; loss of appetite; weakness or fatigue; cough; dizziness; and palpitations.

• On an average, women are nearly a decade older than men at the time of their initial heart attack.

All postmenopausal women should try to keep insulin at normal levels through weight loss, regular exercise and other methods. Postmenopausal women with elevated insulin levels are at higher risk of developing breast cancer.

As per a report published in the International Journal of Cancer from Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York City, there is a strong association between elevated insulin levels in the blood and increased risk of breast cancer. The researchers examined data on 5,450 women who took part in the Women’s Health Initiative and found that women with insulin levels in the highest third were twice as likely to develop breast cancer as women in the bottom third.

The link between elevated insulin levels and breast cancer was stronger for thin women than for obese women, who tend to have higher insulin levels. This finding is potentially important because it indicates that, in postmenopausal women, insulin may be a risk factor for breast cancer that is independent of obesity.

Inspirational Story

Girl and the Plants

A little girl was enjoying the beauty of the garden in her home. Her father had a good collection of rare and exotic plants. He grew them with tender care.

The girl was fascinated by a plant full of fine and fragrant flowers. She went near the plant and enjoyed its beauty and the fragrance of its fine flowers. Suddenly she noted that the plant was growing in a heap of filth. She could not tolerate the presence of dirt at the bottom of the plant with such fantastic flowers.

She conceived a plan to clean the plant. She pulled the plant with all her might and uprooted it. She then carried it to the tap and washed the shoot and roots in running tap–water till all traces of dirt were washed away. She then placed the plant on a clean stone and went away, thinking that she had done a great deed indeed.

Later her father came to the garden and saw the uprooted plant. Its flowers and leaves had wilted and the plant had almost died in the scorching sun. His little daughter ran to him to exhibit her achievement. ‘I have cleaned it, Daddy, she reported innocently. It was placed in dirty soil. Now it is clean.

The father showed her how her treatment had almost killed the plant. He told her that he had collected the filthy soil and placed it to cover the plant’s roots as it was the best medium to grow that plant. It could grow up healthily and produce fine flowers only if grown in filthy soil. She was sad that the plant had suffered and withered by her cleaning.

Pain, poverty and illness may cause agony in our life. Sight of successful persons may make us depressed and envious. A great gardener mixes the right soil for each plant. In the same way God provides each of us with the best environment required for optimum spiritual growth. But it may appear to be unpleasant to us and we may even complain to God about our plight.

Women Beware Of Heart Disease

More women die of cardiovascular disease than from the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. More than 80 percent of cardiac events in women can be prevented by modifying diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking. Dr Aggarwal said that the following may be the warning signals of heart attack:

1.     Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of the chest. It lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.
2.     Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
3.     Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
4.     Breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

As with men, the most common heart attack symptom in women too is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea / vomiting and back or jaw pain.

In presence of any of the above one should not wait for more than five minutes and get to a hospital right away.
