Emotionally stressful events, and more specifically, anger, immediately precede and appear to trigger the onset of acute heart attack. Episodes of anger are capable of triggering the onset of acute heart attack and aspirin can reduce this risk. People who cannot control their anger should ask their doctors to consider taking aspirin.

The Onset Anger Scale identified 39 patients with episodes of anger in the 2 hours before the onset of heart attack. The relative risk of heart attack in the 2 hours after an episode of anger was 23. Regular users of aspirin had a significantly lower relative risk (1.4) than nonusers (2.9). Anger in response to stress is also of particular importance for the development of premature heart attack in young men. An episode of anger may also trigger an acute heart attack in the next 2 hours.

Any breathlessness after the age of 40, appearing for the first time in winter, is cardiac asthma unless proved otherwise. Such patients should immediately have their blood pressure check-up done and if high needs immediate medical attention. First-onset breathlessness can also be an indication of angina or heart attack. However, the more common is winter asthma or acute exacerbation of winter COPD (chronic bronchitis). Asthma is reversible airway obstruction and COPD is irreversible airway obstruction. Sudden exposure to cold, humidity, pollution at lower levels in atmosphere can precipitate asthma in susceptible individuals. Winter is the time to increase the dose of asthma medicines.

If a person can speak a full sentence, the asthma attack is mild; if a person speaks broken sentences the asthma attack is moderate and if the person is able to speak only words then the asthma attack is severe. Severe attack of asthma needs immediate hospitalization.

Stress is the reaction of the body or the mind to the interpretation of a known situation. Stress management therefore involves either changing the situation changing the interpretation or taming the body the yogic way in such a way that stress does not affect the body. Every situation has two sides. Changing the interpretation means looking at the other side of the situation. It is something like half glass of water which can be interpreted either as half empty or half full. Studies have shown that anger hostility and aggression are the new risk factors for heart disease. It has been shown that even recall of anger can precipitate a heart attack. Many studies have shown that when doctors talk positive in front of unconscious patients in ICU their outcome is better than those if doctors talk negative. The best way to practice spiritual medicine is to experience silence in the thoughts speech and action. Simply walking in the nature with silence in the mind and experiencing the sounds of nature can be as effective as 20 minutes of meditation. More than 30 people of the society including children have potbelly abdominal obesity. India is witnessing an epidemic of metabolic syndrome which is characterized by abdominal obesity high triglyceride low good cholesterol high blood pressure and high sugar. Abdominal girth of more than 90 cm in men and 80 cm in women indicates that the person is vulnerable to future heart attack. Normal weight obesity is the new epidemic of the society. A person could be obese even if his her body weight was within the normal range. An extra inch of fat around the abdomen increases the chances of heart disease by 1.5 times. Normally once the height stops growing most organs will also stop growing. The weight of the heart liver of kidney cannot increase after that. Only muscles can build up to some extent. The only thing after that stage which can increase the weight of the body is deposition of fat. Therefore any weight gain after puberty is invariably due to fat. Though the overall weight can be in the acceptable normal range but any weight gain within that range will be abnormal for that person. One should not gain weight of more than 5 kg after the age of 20 years in males and 18 years in females. After the age of 50 the weight should reduce and not increase. Potbelly obesity is linked to eating refined carbohydrates and not animal fats. General obesity is linked to eating animal fats. Refined carbohydrate includes white rice white maida and white sugar. Brown sugar is better than white sugar. Refined carbohydrates are called bad carbohydrates and animal fat is called bad fat. Trans fat or vanaspati is bad for health. Trans fats increase the levels of bad cholesterol and reduce good cholesterol in the body. Reduction in weight can reduce snoring pain of arthritis blood pressure and control uncontrolled diabetes.

This sutra from Bible has a very deep significance in day to day life. The truth is ever lasting and always ends up in internal happiness and self realization. And in the long run it always gives you happiness and an all win situation. A lying tongue on the contrary will only give you a momentary pleasure but will lead to or create some difficulty later in life. Spoken words cannot come back just as in the case of a released arrow from the bow. Once lost one cannot get back his youth virginity or respect. Similarly spoken bad words cannot be taken back and once spoken will create negative waves in the other persons on whom they were spoken mind which will persist as repressed thoughts or memory in the people s mind forever. Such bad memories will keep on coming back in the person s mind causing damage to the personal relationships. A spoken word is a karmic expression. For every karmic action there is an opposite and equal reaction. For every negative karmic action one has to pay the debt either now or in future. The law of karma says that every debt has to be paid. It is always better to avoid negative language both in spoken words as well as in the mind. The yoga sutras of Patanjali describe thinking speaking or doing anything wrong as having the same karmic significance. We should not only purify ourselves in actions and spoken words but also in the mind. If a person keeps negative thoughts in the mind sooner or later the same will be reflected to the outside world. The momentary pleasure which one gets by lying has no spiritual significance as it only satisfies your ego sense or makes you attached to any of the five senses. The transient pleasure experienced by the body stimulates a chain of reactions consisting of action memory and desire leading to action again which will only intensify the greed attachments. In the Mahabharata Lord Krishna has given only two examples which work as an exception to such a situation. Any truth which harms others may not be spoken and any lie which does not harm anyone but benefits a few may be spoken. Truth is the opposite of doubt and it is always better to clear all the doubts from the mind as any repressed doubts can end up into causation of heart attack paralysis and cancer. Truth also means taking conscious based decisions as the consciousness will never lie. While taking any decision always ask oneself Is it the truth Is it necessary And will it bring happiness to me and the people around Lord Krishna is also described as Satchitanand which only indicates qualities like truthfulness conscious based decisions and internal happiness. Truthfulness has to be practiced for over a period of time and made a part and parcel of your daily life. Winter can be divided into wet and dry winter. Wet or early winter is characterized by fall in temperature along with high humidity. Environmentally, we see fog and smog during this season. Dry or late winter on the other hand is characterized by absence of fog, smog and presence of chilly airy winds.
Most hypothermia illnesses occur in dry late winter. The transition phase between wet and dry winter is on the day of Lohri. In terms of Ayurveda, this means shifting from Kapha to Vata atmosphere. The onset of dry winter is also the time for accelerated movement disorders in the body. Accelerated hypertension, arrhythmias, paroxysmal atrial tachycardia, brain hemorrhage, heart attack etc. all occur when dry late winter starts.

The seeds of heart blockages are born while a person is in his adolescence or childhood. Prevention, therefore, must start right at that age.
The doctors said that heart attack cannot be given or accepted as a Gift. It takes minimum 15 years to live a lifestyle against the laws of nature to develop early blockages. Heart disease, therefore, is reversible and gives you enough time to reverse. They also said that in diet one should adopt the principle of moderations and variety and include all seven colours and six tastes in their diet.
Traditional dances are better than western dance as classical traditional dance is a mix of yoga, meditation, relaxation and exercise.

Traditionally, we recognize Raksha Bandhan as a bond of love between a brother and a sister. Rakhi is synonymous with purity of the relationship. The tying of the rakhi also denotes the brother’s vow to protect his sister. The Raksha Bandhan festival represents the spirit of fraternity. It is a traditional way to celebrate the unconditional love between siblings. The word ‘Raksha’ means protection and ‘Bandhan’ signifies bondage. Rakhi is a sacred that sister ties on her brother’s wrist to protect him from all types of negativity in life. The brother also vows to protect his loving sister by offering her a suitable gift. This festival that glorifies precious emotions of love, care and affection Give your sister the precious gift of good health on this Raksha Bandhan. Gift her a health checkup package. Share love not sweets. Sweets are rich in trans-fats and refined carbohydrates. Trans-fats increase LDL or the bad cholesterol and lower HDL or the healthy cholesterol and increase the risk for diseases like heart attack. Sweets that are made of hydrogenated fats are rich in trans-fats. Also, do not gift chocolates as they are rich in refined sugar and saturated fats. They can be harmful to the health. Chocolates can increase the chances of fatty liver, abdominal obesity and metabolic syndrome. Give dry fruits, jaggery chana, sattu, fruits instead of sweets, chocolates and cookies. All women needs iron an proteins. Jaggery is high in iron and chana (black gram) in proteins. Sattu is the natural healthy fast food and good for the health. Fresh fruits are health friendly. One should eat atleast 3-5 servings of fruits every day, Dry fruits are protective as they have high contents of natural vitamin E. The ankle–brachial index (ABI), a simple, non–invasive 10–minute test should be incorporated into a routine physical exam to diagnose peripheral arterial disease in the middle-aged and the elderly, especially those with heart attack risk factors like smokers, diabetics and the ones with high BP or cholesterol levels.

With the patient in a supine position, the doctor takes blood pressure readings from both arms; he then takes blood pressure readings from both ankles with a sphygmomanometer and Doppler device. ABI value is calculated by dividing the higher systolic pressure in each leg by the higher systolic brachial pressure. ABI scores should be interpreted as follows:

• Greater than 0.90: Normal

• 0.71 – 0.90: Mild obstruction

• 0.41 – 0.70: Moderate obstruction

• Less than 0.40: Severe obstruction

• More than 1.30: Calcification of the vessels

Presence of peripheral arterial disease may indicate associated blockages in the heart and proneness to heart attack or paralysis.

• Chest pain is still the most common sign of a heart attack for most women but women are more likely than men to have symptoms other than chest pain or discomfort when experiencing a heart pain. In a study published in Archives of Internal Medicine researchers examined 35 years of research that yielded 69 studies and found that, between 30 and 37 percent of women did not have chest discomfort during a heart attack. In contrast, 17 to 27 percent of men did not experience chest discomfort.

• Older people are also more likely to have heart attack without chest discomfort. Absence of chest discomfort is a strong predictor for missed diagnosis and treatment delays.

• Women are also more likely than men to experience other forms of cardiac chest pain syndromes, such as unstable angina, and they appear to report a wider range of symptoms associated with acute coronary syndrome. They are more likely to report pain in the middle or upper back, neck, or jaw; shortness of breath; nausea or vomiting; indigestion; loss of appetite; weakness or fatigue; cough; dizziness; and palpitations.

• Women are, on an average, nearly a decade older than men at the time of their initial heart attack. Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death among U.S. women, and affects one in 10 women over the age of 18.

Myth No. 1: It is ok to have a high blood pressure in elderly.Blood pressure tends to rise with age, but it does not mean that this rise is normal. It happens because with age, the arterial walls become stiff and this stiffness cannot be called as a normal stiffness. Stiff arteries make the heart to pump harder. Blood pounding against the artery walls, damages them over time. The overworked heart muscles become less effective and pumps even harder to meet the body demand for blood. This further damages the arteries and invites fats into the artery walls. This results in lipid deposition, formation of blockage and future heart attack and paralysis.

Myth No. 2: The risk of heart disease can be lowered with vitamins and supplements.

It’s a myth that vitamin C, E and β carotenes lower heart attack risk. The American Heart Association (AHA) has stated that there is no scientific evidence that these supplements prevent or treat heart diseases. The fact is eat a wide variety of nutritious food which includes all 6 tastes and 7 colors and get natural vitamins and supplements.

Myth No. 3: Women do not suffer from heart disease.

The fact is whether you are a man or a woman, you are at risk, if you do not follow the lifestyle. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women over age 65. Today more woman get heart disease than all the cancers in women combined.

Myth No. 4: Heart patients should not eat fat at all. It is true that you should eat a diet low in saturated fat and zero in transfats but other fats like unsaturated fats in vegetable oil are beneficial. In fact, eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids twice a week can lower the risk of heart disease.

The majority of known risk factors for heart attack disease are modifiable by specific preventive measures.

The nine potentially modifiable factors include smoking, dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, abdominal obesity, psychosocial factors, regular alcohol consumption, daily consumption of fruits and vegetables and regular physical activity. These account for over 90 percent of the population attributable risk of a first heart attack.

In addition, aspirin is recommended for primary prevention of heart disease for men and women whose 10–year risk of a first heart attack event is 6 percent or greater.

Smoking cessation reduces the risk of both heart attack and stroke. One year after quitting, the risk of heart attack and death from heart disease is reduced by one–half, and after several years begins to approach that of nonsmokers.

A number of observational studies have shown a strong inverse relationship between leisure time activity and decreased risks of CVD. Walking 80 minutes in a day and whenever possible with a speed of 80 steps per minute are the current recommendations.

Prehypertension triples the risk of heart attack

A person with pre–hypertension, systolic blood pressure between 120–139 mmHg and diastolic pressure between 80–89 mmHg, is more than three times likely to have a heart attack and 1.7 times more likely to have heart disease than a person whose blood pressure is lower than 120/80 mmHg. Systolic blood pressure is the pressure against the artery wall when the heart beats and diastolic blood pressure is the pressure when the heart is at rest between the heart beats. Normal blood pressure is lower than 120/80 mmHg and hypertension is a blood pressure more than 140/90 mmHg or higher. Research has shown that if prehypertension is aggressively treated, 45% of all heart attacks can be prevented. Every effort should be made to lower the blood pressure below 120/80 mmHg. Lifestyle modifications such as weight control, regular physical activity and changes in diet are recommended for people with pre–hypertension. The importance of prehypertension has been listed as one of the top 10 recent advances in cardiology.

Water–soluble aspirin and clot-dissolving drugs can stop most heart attacks in progress, reduce disability and save lives. They work best if given within one hour of when signs of heart attack begin to appear. It is therefore important to recognize the warning signs of a heart attack and act right away. The 5 warning signs of a heart attack, which everybody must know are: 1. Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck or back. 2. Feeling weak, lightheaded, or faint. 3. Chest pain or discomfort. 4. Pain or discomfort in the arms or shoulder. 5. Shortness of breath Act fast 1. Take 300 mg water–soluble aspirin and chew it if a heart attack is suspected. 2. Get yourself rushed to a nearest heart centre for clot–dissolving therapy. 3. You may require an emergency angiography and angioplasty to remove the clot. If there is a cardiac arrest, the bystander should follow the CPR 10 mantra: “within 10 minutes of death, earlier the better; at least for the next 10 minutes, longer the better; compress the centre of the chest of the dead person continuously and effectively with a speed of 10×10 i.e. 100 per minute.”
