  1. Don’t stay in one position for too long
  2. Keep the computer monitor at eye level.
  3. Use the hands–free function of the phone or wear a headset.
  4. Prop your touch–screen tablet or the ipad on a pillow so that it sits at a 45° angle, instead of lying flat on your lap.
  5. Keep your prescription up to date, if you wear glasses to prevent leaning your head back to see better.
  6. Don’t use too many pillows as it can stifle your neck’s range of motion.
  7. Before you move a big wardrobe across the room, consider what it might do to your neck and back, and ask for help.
  8. Sleep well.
  9. Call your doctor if neck pain is associated with radiating pain, weakness, or numbness of an arm or leg.
  10. Also call the doctor if you have fever or weight loss associated with your neck pain, or severe pain.

It is natural for us to promise or offer to pray for someone who suffers from sickness. So many people believe in the power of prayer that it has now caught the attention of scientists and doctors. Today most hospitals and nursing homes are building prayer rooms for their patients, based on the principle that a relaxed mind is a creative mind. During prayer, a person is in touch with the consciousness, and is able to take correct decisions. Most doctors even write on their prescription “I treat He cures”.

Medically it has been proved that the subconscious mind of an unconscious person is listening. Any prayer therefore would be captured by the patient, building inner confidence and faith to fight terminal sickness. We have seen the classical example of the effect of mass prayer on a person’s health in the case of Amitabh Bachchan’s illness.

“Praying for health is one of the most common complementary treatments people do on their own,” said Dr Harold G Koenig, co–director of the Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health at Duke University Medical Center.

About 90% of Americans and almost 100% Indians pray at some point in their lives, and when they’re under stress, such as when they’re sick, they’re even more likely to pray.

More than one–third of the people surveyed in a recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine said they often turned to prayer when faced with medical concerns. In a poll involving more than 2,000 Americans, 75% of those who prayed said they prayed for wellness, while 22% said they prayed for specific medical conditions.

Numerous random studies have been conducted on this subject. In one such study, neither the patients nor the healthcare providers had any idea who was being prayed for. The coronary–care unit patients didn’t even know there was a study being conducted. And, those praying for the patients had never even met them. The result: While those in the prayer group had about the same length of hospital stay, their overall health was slightly better than the group that didn’t receive special prayers.

“Prayer may be an effective adjunct to standard medical care,” wrote the authors of this 1999 study, also published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. However, a more recent trial from the April 2006 issue of the American Heart Journal suggests that it’s even possible for some harm to come from prayer. In this study, which included 1,800 people scheduled for heart surgery, the group who knew they were receiving prayers developed more complications from the procedure, compared to those who had not been a focus of prayer.

Many patients are reluctant and do not discuss this subject with their doctors. Only 11% patients mention prayer to their doctors. But, doctors are more open to the subject than the patients realize, particularly in serious medical situations. In a study of doctors’ attitudes toward prayer and spiritual behavior, almost 85% of the doctors thought they should be aware of their patients’ spiritual beliefs. Most doctors said they wouldn’t pray with their patients even if they were dying, unless the patient specifically asked the doctor to pray with them. In that case, 77% of the doctors were willing to pray for their patient.

Most people are convinced that prayer helps. Some people are ‘foxhole religious’ types and prayer is almost a reaction or cry to the Universe for help. However, many people do it because they’ve experienced benefit from it in the past.

If a patient wants to pray and feels it might be helpful, there’s no reason he should not. If he believes that prayer might work, then he should use it.

Two hardest words for a doctor to say: “I’m sorry.”

Most defense lawyers counsels doctors not to apologize to patients. Their view is that if you say you’re sorry for something, you are implicitly taking some degree of responsibility for whatever has happened or in other words you are pleading guilty. The complainant’s lawyers may use a doctor’s apology to the maximum extent possible to show the doctor knew what they did was wrong. The usual approach is deny and defend.

But

  1. Apologizing after a medical error is the humane thing to do.
  2. Patients often sue simply because it’s the only way to find out what went wrong.
  3. Erecting a wall of silence is “enough to make someone very angry. And it’s awfully easy for an angry person to find a lawyer who will listen to them. At that point, it’s too late for sorry.
  4. Over 35 states in the USA have passed laws prohibiting doctors’ apologies from being used against them in court. {apology laws)
  5. By promptly disclosing medical errors and offering earnest apologies and fair compensation one can hope to restore integrity to dealings with patients, make it easier to learn from mistakes and dilute anger that often fuels lawsuits.

Apology the spiritual answer

  1. The word ‘sorry’ is synonymous with apology.
  2. To err is human, to admit one’s error is superhuman.
  3. Sorry should be heart felt and not ego felt. You should not only say sorry but it should look like that you are sorry.
  4. Tremendous courage is entailed to face the victim of our wrong doing and apologise.
  5. It is generally seen that those who are in harmony with their life and consequently with themselves, find it easier to say ‘I’m sorry’. They are the positive, conscientious ones who are at peace only after making amends for their misdeeds.
  6. The word ‘sorry’ in itself is imbued with so much potential and power. Within a fraction of a second, grave mistakes are diluted, tepid and estranged relations are brought alive, animosity and rancour are dissolved, misunderstandings resolved and tense situations ease out resulting in harmony and rapprochement.
  7. To forgive and forget is a common spiritual saying
  8. Remember we all do mistakes and seek forgiveness form GOD every day.

  1. Everybody should be insured and for those who cannot, the government must pay for their insurance. Insurance should be added in the prescription of a doctor.

  • Lowers the risk of developing hypertension and diabetes.
  • Reduces the risk for colon cancer and some other forms of cancer.
  • Improves mood and mental functioning.
  • Keeps the bones strong and joints healthy.
  • Helps you to maintain a healthy weight.
  • Help maintain independence into later years
  • Age is no bar; there is abundant evidence that exercise can enhance health and well–being. But today for most watching TV, surfing the Internet, or playing computer and video games is replacing the helpful exercises.
  • The minimum threshold for good health is to burn at least 700 to 1,000 calories a week through physical pursuits.
  • Exercise improves health and can extend life. Adding as little as 30 min of moderately intense daily physical activity can help one avoid a host of serious ailments, including heart disease, diabetes, depression, and several types of cancer, particularly breast and colon cancers.
  • Regular exercise can also help one sleep better, reduce stress, control weight, brighten mood, sharpen mental functioning, and improve sex life.

As per Harvard researchers a well–rounded exercise program must have all the four components:

  • Aerobic activity: It is the centerpiece of any fitness program. Most benefits of exercise revolve around aerobic cardiovascular activity, which includes walking, jogging, swimming, and cycling. One should work out at moderate intensity when performing aerobic exercise—brisk walking that quickens the breathing is one example. This level of activity is safe.
  • Strength training: Strength or resistance training, such as elastic–band workouts and the use of weight machines or free weights, are important for building muscle and protecting bone. Bones lose calcium and weaken with age, but strength training can help slow or sometimes even reverse this trend
  • Flexibility training: Eases back pain; muscles tend to shorten and weaken with age. Shorter, stiffer muscle fibers make one vulnerable to injuries, back pain, and stress. But regularly performing exercises that isolate and stretch the elastic fibers surrounding the muscles and tendons can counteract this process. And stretching improves posture and balance.
  • Balance exercises: Prevent fall; balance erode over time, and regularly performing balance exercises is one of the best ways to protect against falls that lead to temporary or permanent disability. Balance exercises take only a few minutes and often fit easily into the warm–up portion of a workout. Many strength–training exercises also serve as balance exercises. Or balance–enhancing movements may simply be woven into other forms of exercise, such as tai chi, yoga, and Pilates.
