A new Northwestern Medicine study has reported that the timing, intensity and duration of exposure to light during the day are linked to your weight.

People who had most of their daily exposure to even moderately bright light in the morning had a significantly lower body mass index than those who had most of their light exposure later in the day.

“The earlier this light exposure occurred during the day, the lower the individuals’ body mass index,” said co–lead author Kathryn Reid, research associate professor of neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “The later the hour of moderately bright light exposure, the higher a person’s BMI.”

The influence of morning light exposure on body weight was independent of an individual’s physical activity level, caloric intake, sleep timing, age or season. It accounted for about 20 percent of a person’s BMI.

“Light is the most potent agent to synchronize your internal body clock that regulates circadian rhythms, which in turn also regulate energy balance,” said study senior author Phyllis C. Zee, M.D. “The message is that you should get more bright light between 8 a.m. and noon.” About 20 to 30 minutes of morning light is enough to affect BMI.

When it comes to losing weight, cut down on liquid calories rather than food.

Body is able to self-regulate its intake of solid food. If you eat too much solid food at lunch, you’ll tend to eat less at dinner. But the same self-regulation is not in place for what you drink. The body does not adjust to liquid calories, so over time, you gain more weight.

Cutting back on calories from sugary drinks – by only one serving per day – can account for nearly two-and-a-half pounds of lost weight over 18 months.

Beverages are categorized into eight categories

1. Sugar-sweetened beverages (including soft drinks, fruit drinks, fruit punch, or high-calorie beverages sweetened with sugar)

2. Diet drinks such as diet soda and other diet drinks that were artificially sweetened

3. Milk (including whole milk, 2 percent milk, and 1 percent skim)

4. 100 percent fruit and vegetable juice

5. Coffee and tea with sugar

6. Coffee and tea without sugar

7. Alcoholic beverages

8. Water with no calories The best drinks are water, plain soda and tea/coffee with no sugar.

Both obese men and women can face fertility problems unless they reduce their weight. Reducing weight as the first step can bring back their fertility. Obese men are more than three times as likely to have low sperm counts compared with their normal-weight peers. A study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility showed that the heaviest men were at 3-fold increased risk of having a low count of progressively motile sperms, those that swim forward in a straight line.

• Increased body fat can also contribute to lower testosterone levels and higher estrogen levels.

• Obese men were also 1.6 times more likely than overweight or normal-weight men to have a high percentage of abnormally shaped sperm.

• There is a trend toward increasing likelihood of erectile dysfunction with increasing BMI.

• Obesity is associated with a greater risk of impotence.

• Obesity is also associated with metabolic syndrome and polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) in women and associated infertility.
