Once, Buddha, while traveling, happened to pass a lake. Buddha told one of his disciples, I am thirsty. Do get me some water from that lake there.

The disciple noticed that some people were washing clothes in the water and, right at that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake. As a result, the water became very muddy, very turbid. The disciple thought, how can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink! So he came back and told Buddha – The water in there is very muddy. I don’t think it is fit to drink.

After about an hour later Buddha asked the same disciple again to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. This time the disciple found that the lake had absolutely clear water in it. The mud had settled down and the water was fit for drinking. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha.

Buddha looked at the water and said – See what you did to make the water clean. You let it be … and the mud settled down on its own and you got clear water… Your mind is also like that. When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. You don’t have to put in any effort to calm it down. It will happen. It is effortless.

  1. Pass urine immediately after a sexual intercourse. Apart from this, keep a check on the kind of underwear you use.
  2. Maintain proper personal hygiene after urinating or defecating. Consult a doctor immediately in case of any recurrent symptoms.
  3. Drinking cranberry juice has been thought to help decrease frequent infections. This is particularly true for women. Cranberries are known to contain substances that can prevent infection-causing bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract walls.
  4. Make sure you are adequately hydrated and drink at least 7 to 8 glasses of water a day.
  5. Choose lubricated condoms that do not contain spermicide. Spermicide can cause irritation and allow the bacteria to grow.

The Seven Dhatus in Ayurveda

As per Ayurveda physiology, food is Brahman and contains the same consciousness as in us and this consciousness is the essence of any food.

Any food digested is converted into three portions, the gross undigested food is converted into waste (feces); the middle one is converted in one of the Dhatus and the subtlest form gets converted into ojas or the immunity.

As per standard Ayurveda, food once eaten is converted into the first Dhatu i.e. Rasa. Once the formation of Rasa is complete, the remaining is converted into Rakta (blood).The left over essence of food makes Mamsa (muscles), the leftover of which makes (Medha (adipose tissue) and so on to form Asthi (Bone), Majja (bone marrow) and Shukra (sperm/ova).

As per this physiology, the second Dhatu will only form once the first Dhatu is of good quality and so on and at any step if the Dhatu is not formed properly, the subsequent Dhatu will also be defectively formed.

For example, defective Dhatu at the stage of Asthi (bone) will have normal plasma (blood), muscle and adipose tissue but may have an impaired immunity/sperm/bone marrow. Similarly, defective Dhatu at the level of bone marrow may have only impaired immunity with no impairment of other Dhatus. On the other hand, impairment of Dhatus at the level of plasma or blood will involve all other Dhatus in sickness. Isolated disorders of Shukra may have no involvement of other Dhatus at all.

This Ayurveda principle can help us to answer many yet unanswered questions in modern allopathy. Like – why in typhoid fever all the organs are involved and why in azoospermia no other organ is involved.

The Upanishads talk about formation of Dhatus in much more detail. According to them, different types of foods make different types of Dhatus. Fiery foods like oil and ghee are responsible for formation of Karmendriyan (part of shukra), bone and bone marrow (Dhatu).

The earthy foods are responsible for formation of Gnanandriyan and Manas (shukra) and muscle (flesh) and water in food is responsible for formation of Rasa and Rakta (plasma and blood) and Pran (Shukra).

This means that every different type of food would make different types of Dhatus and a balanced food with a combination of fire, water and earth will only be responsible for formation of shukra, immunity or the essence.

Dehydration can precipitate heart attack in susceptible individuals. Dehydration can be dangerous in patients with uncontrolled blood pressure or diabetes. In these patients, dehydration can make the blood thicker and precipitate heart attack.

Dehydration is common in summer, and with the rising temperatures, chances of a person developing dehydration increase. A person, therefore, needs to increase fluid intake during summer.

The normal fluid requirement is 30 ml per kg weight, but the same needs to be increased in the summer because of the loss of fluid from sweating. Apart from water, sodium (Na) or salt is also lost.

Walking is a necessity for heart patients and it should be continued even during peak summer but the peak heat periods should be avoided. One can walk early in the morning or late in the evening.

A study has shown that soaking potatoes in water before frying cuts down on the formation of the suspected carcinogen acrylamide.

Acrylamide is created when starch-rich foods are cooked at high temperatures, (120 C) such as frying, baking, grilling, broiling or roasting. Raw or even boiled potatoes test negative for the chemical. Boiling and microwaving appear less likely to form acrylamide as the coking does not involve very high temperatures. Longer cooking times increase the amount of acrylamide produced when the temperature is high enough.

Potato chips and French fries contain high levels of acrylamide compared to other foods, with lower levels also present in bread and cereals.

Acrylamide, is harmful to health and may cause cancer in animals.

In a study published in Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture it has been found that simply soaking potatoes before frying can significantly reduce the formation of acrylamide. The researchers tried three different approaches. They washed raw French fries, soaked them for 30 minutes, and soaked them for two hours. This reduced acrylamide levels by up to 23 percent, 38 percent and 48 percent, respectively, but only if the fries were cooked to a light color. It’s not clear whether the same reductions could be achieved if French fries are cooked to a deep, dark brown.

The cooking and re-cooking of fried foods in the same fry pan or broiler is the main cause. Even the thoroughly washed iron skillet can continue to contain submerged carcinogens collected from previous use. Most restaurants uses the same rancid cooking oil for days or even weeks and even reusing it after washing the pot.

Traditional ayurveda has been advocating against deep frying and has been advocating low temperature cooking for centuries.

However occasional consumption of these products is not likely to be a health concern. Apart from foods, cigarette smoking is the other source of acrylamide.
